... Well, it makes a change from 300 threads about bird muck!!

It seems that snails and slugs, in La France, at least, are not too partial to cold wet pvc mud flaps, and are quite prepared to labour their way further north, to the more comfortable surroundings of 100% Tencate cotton canvas!

Gave the trails (one on each of my side panels of my front wall) a quick dab with kitchen roll, which wasn't great, so then an old towel, which seemed to help a little, but after one subsequent thorough (rain) soaking and one bout of drying in the sun, visible signs, albeit a little less obvious, are still there.
Unless anyone comes on here with tales of woe, I'm not overly concerned at present, and am currently working on the same lines as the aforementioned bird muck... a quick wipe then leave it for the weather to sort out.

... Am I on the right lines? Shall I leave it now?... or do snails drag acid or summat around with them all night!!

All tips and quips gratefully received.

My Nan used to use White Vinegar to remove slug slime from my brother's hands (gross little thing he used to be). I think I once read this is can also be used diluted on tents for mould and mildew removal????

My trailer tent (Conway with CGI/Cabanon canvas) got covered with snail trails both outside and in during one particularly wet week in France a few years back. It didn't actually occur to me to worry about it and the tent never leaked so really, I just forgot about it till you reminded me just now. I don't recall seeing residual trails after the next bout of rain. So on that basis I suggest you wait and see. If you want to do something about it I suggest a clean sponge and copious amounts of plan water to dilute any lingering slime and rinse it out.

(Our canvas has never been proofed or reproofed btw, totally au naturelle. Just for your information.)

Thanks you two.
As it's all dry and bagged up now, I think I'll leave it. Probably get it out next weekend, and see what I think then. If it appears no worse, I'll just leave it for the weather to do it's job, next time out, which will probably be early October.

Cheers.

If they are French snails I believe their trails are edible.

Be careful, Mucker, white vinegar is an acid. I use it for all sorts of things cleaning taps, grout, water residue, windows, toilets and whitening. All have to be rinsed thoroughly with water. (Dilution is usually 1-10 of vinegar to water. Perhaps someone will have some wise words on this (better than me).

But, anyway, you should have scraped them off and eaten them - you were in France!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good trip though?!!

Snail slime is waterproof, the snail uses it to seal itself in its shell during dry periods preventing loss of moisture. Slugs do something similar by sealing themselves in cracks and crevices.
Leave it and consider it extra water proofing.

We've been slimed before Mucker, but was on polycotton at the time. I wiped it with a very wet cloth to saturate it as I wiped it. Had reduced it a bit once dry. It had weathered away by the end of that trip!
Prevention is better than cure, the solution is a band of copper around the tent, or is that slugs.... :)

I have had experience of the odd bit of wildlife...Animal....Bird and invertebrate in and around my tent(s) over the years....Most recent and most memorable being the 30 odd snails found ensconced between my G/sheet and footprint while de camping from a site in the wilds of Sutherland (North West Scotland)

I have no tips to give in dealing with slime trails(As after a quick looksee) all the slime trails where on the footprint and not the G/sheet.....Part of which seemed to have been used as a communial toilet....

I was more concerned after see seeing the vivid blue/yellow/turquoise shells on these creatures as to weather they were edible or not....But thought better of my original Idea of placing them in a pot (for consummtion at home) As I'm not too sure how to cook them) and placed them carefully in the long grass beside my pitch to continue on their merry(If somewhat slow)way through the local undergrowth....

One thing that struck me was their unerring understanding of staying on the edges of my footprint and not up the middle where I would have no doubt squashed a few....Footprint was given a quick wipe down on my return to civilisation...With as far As I can tell no detriment to the waterproof qualities of the Footprint....

Jelboy.

Not a lot different to last year, in all honesty mate. Same site, but less neighbours. A lot less, to be fair. Similar cycle routes but less sunshine. Repeated most of our day trips, but got more rain, particularly in the second week.

Don't get me wrong, we still had a good holiday, but it wasn't quite as great as we normally have, and I don't think it would interest others.

The most exciting thing that happened is that, after 3 years, we found out our fleece lined super-doopah fisherman's sleeping bags actually zip together as a double... And I ain't posting those pics!!

What?!!! It's taken 3 whole years to discover all the niceities of a "double" sleeping bag!!! Did Muckerette know?
OH always insists on zipping ours (singles) together and, when looking at new ones, always checks that they will zip together as well.

Glad you had a nice holiday, sorry to hear weather wasn't its' usual best for you. It's been a funny year for weather. On all our trips we've only managed either one or two days of sunshine and that's it. On saying that just got back from St. Davids, Pembrokeshire last week and, considering we were there for 12 nights, it did not rain one drop on us (rained a couple of times through the night) and we actually came back with "a bit of a tan" and it reached 21degrees once, phew!!! Gobsmacked!

Nice you're back anyway!

Snail trails on fabrics....

Let it dry out. Brush gently with a brush. An old tooth brush is something I would use at home.

A small (to have control) and stiff to 'tickle' the fabric rather then stiff to hurt the canvas.
