Hi everyone looking for some advice for my son who wishes to fullfil his dream of travelling around the country in his bowtop caravan with his trusty steads (2 horses) he has never done it before its only ever been a hobby with him but now wants to take the plunge question is does anyone know anywhere were they allow bowtops and horses ? maybe farms? he is looking at devon somerset cornwall areas or will he be destined to wild camps thank you
He should try to do it properly and camp in the wild. I have found that most landowners are tolerant of the genuine 'gypsy' travellers using caravans and horses. Of course genuine travellers know how to live off the land and don't need campsites. They also clean up after themselves and leave little evidence of their existence after leaving.
A family of genuine travellers used to frequent the area where I live but I haven't seen them around for some years now. Local people used to chat to them and give them a few things, although of course they asked for nothing and needed little.
I guess most of us who are used to bricks and mortar and running water would have to rely on campsites once in awhile though, even just for a good shower and replenish the water.
Live in Cornwall and used to have (before he passed on) a chap who used to travel around in a bowtop gypsy caravan pulled by one horse. He parked up on any spare land available. So well known that when his original horse died local people clubbed together and bought him another one. Schools used to take classes to talk to him and people local to where he stopped used to take him hot meals, stems, cottage pies etc. Not sure if he was of genuine gypsy blood but never any mess left when he moved on.
You can hire such vans along with horse for holidays, so the people hiring must be given camp sites they are permitted to use so long as horse can make it.
Enquire about hiring and places your allowed to stay and then just use the later.
