I will be camping in March. I have a reasonable 3 season sleeping bag but I know I will be cold so I will be taking a fleece liner. BUT I've tried it out at home and I just can't get the liner and the bag to work together. The liner ruckles up and moves and twists and ties me in knots. So I was wondering if I could put the bag INSIDE the liner.
Would it work or simply cause condensation in the bag? I've used fleece blankets over the bag before now and that seems to work. That is not an option this time as I will be backpacking and need a smaller solution.
Please help! I am starting to worry that I may have taken on a challenge to far!!!

You can get "external liners" or bivvi bag, I had an ex-army goretex one which was large enough for my sleeping bag to go inside. It was also breathable being goretex so no condensation.
I also use a fleece liner but I prefer getting inside the fleece liner first, then open side zip on sleeping bag if it has one and slide in, do up zip and not really had any problem with fleece liner wrapping around me.
Worth a try..

Ditto what vangoman does. I get in the liner and then the bag. No fankles.
A breathable Bivvy bag will help to keep you warm too. I don't think the liner will do much use on the outside.

I will try getting into the liner first and see if that helps. I have been putting the liner into the bag and then trying to wriggle into the bag/liner combo and getting into a terrible tangle. Better to be warm and fleece wrapped than chilly!

Nothing worse than being all finkle fankled in a fleecy inner.
You could also tack the fleece in to the bag or sew in some ties to keep it in place. All depends how strong the bag is.

I put a post on to say fankle was a Scottish verb as some folks were not sure what the word meant. It has been removed..this site is getting worse!

A fleece or silk liner will boost the warmth of a bag. I don't think a polycotton will though. Anything that will help avoid washing a bag is a must as every wash reduces a sleeping bags loft.
I use a cotton liner in my army bag but it has cords inside to keep it in place. My fleece liner boosts my snugpak up a season. Add a Bivvy bag and you have an all year sleep system.

I use a sea to summit reactor liner and found it very good and did not get tangled . The added warmth was very good . Highly recommended.
You could also look at the Alpkit down blanket , would then work well as a summer cover so quite versatile .

Thanks for the help. I have tried getting into the liner frost then getting into the bag. A bit of a wriggle but actually it seemed to help. The bottom of the liner went into the bottom of the bag and I had more of it around me. So I think I'm going to be OK.
And the liner has a draw string round the top so those fankles won't be joining me in the middle of the night !!

I have one of those but bought it specifically to go outside the bag as the OP is talking about. I could see by the dimensions it would be big enough & not compress the down insulation in my bag. It does depend on the size of your bag though.
I use same sleeping bag year around but just beef it up in winter.

Yes same here as much as I would like a high end 4/5 season down bag the cost (probably £500+) is way too much , I find my feet get cold mostly so purchased down booties and that helped in the bag and chilling in tent while unwinding , plus previously mentioned bag liner
