We have camped a few times before beginning of April, first time driving to Pitlochry it was -3 by the time we arrived it was zero. I had loads of layers and our fan heater we ended up sitting in tshirts we were so warm. Last year we camped first 2 weeks of April in Dumfries again we had no problems and we had a baby with us. Plenty layers, good sleeping bags and we put some rugs as insulation under the airbeds and left the heater on all night. We are camping next week and don't have any worries, enjoy it feels great being so cosy inside the tent when you know how cold it is outside also a nice bottle of wine helps heats you from the inside out.

A small tent helps. Always cold in the 8 man but warm in wee tents.
When I was younger I'd be out in the highlands in the depths of winter in a tiny backpacking tent with only a karrimat and a 4 season sleeping bag. I doubt my back could handle that now but I reckon the old karrimats had better insulation than modern sims.
