Just wondered if anyone uses an oil filled radiator in their tent? We use a fan heater currently and leave it on overnight if it is particularly cold. Just wondered if a radiator would be as good, as sometimes the fan heater gets noisy and a bit too warm.

The Range have these in at the moment for a very good price and not too big and bulky to pack.

Any thoughts anyone?

We take a little oil heater like that when we go camping.
I feel happier leaving that on low all night than a fan heater to be honest.

We have two oil filled radiators. They are very low wattage (500w and 700w). Putting one in the bedroom pod ensures a toasty night, they're silent and the external temperatures are low, meaning there's negligible risk of dying horribly. Once the wind gets up though, a 2kw fan heater is far more effective and you won't notice the noise over the flapping of the tent.

I have never used an oil filled radiator in a tent but when I first started with EHU I bought a convector heater which was fantastic in a small tent in chilly weather but when I bought a larger tent and the temperatures became sub zero it was utterly useless.

I now use a fan heater. My theory is that a convector heater or a radiator has to heat a large volume of cold air which then circulates simply by convection or radiation but is cooling down again all the time. Hence it will take quite awhile to heat the inside of a large tent and may not achieve it in really cold weather. Unlike in a house or caravan which is insulated and retains heat better than a tent.

A fan heater on the other hand actually draws cold air though it's heating elements and pumps it out quickly and hot, hence heating a large volume in a short time.

Perhaps a compromise would be a convector heater with an integral fan but in my experience the fans on convector heaters aren't up to much.

Thanks guys, we only camp end of May until end of August so never (hopefully!!) in sub zero temperatures. We only ever leave the heater on overnight if it turns particularly cold as I find if we warm up prior to going to bed, once we're tucked in we don't have a problem. Just thought it might be nice to put one of these in the bedroom pod and leave on once the whole tent is warm from the fan heater, keeping it warm without the noise of the fan!

Yes, if you use a fan heater initially and for the living area then a radiator or convector in the bedroom pod would be a good idea. The alternative is an electric blanket which I am seriously considering
