We are setting off to try camping in the Loire for the first time this summerm I've tried to find information about provision for freezing ice packs on French campsites....and drawn a blank. Does anyone have experience of this?
Depends on the campsite. Some do but some also rent fridges for your pitch. Theres no general rule, it depends on the actual campsite. If you have booked one then speak to them. If there is a campsite shop some sell big bags of ice for a couple of € & you can also buy bags of ice in supermarkets.
Mostly there's a freezer you can use in my experience. Some of the more old school sites run of the frozen water bidon system. They'll usually charge about 1euro for the first one and a bit less for subsequent ones provided you bring the thawed ones back.
Some sites, particularly further south, have banks of chill lockers - look for "consigne frigo" or similar, where you get your own key, for about €5. We only found out about these when we no longer needed them.
I don't think you need to unless you've got your heart set on somewhere in particular. Maybe book somewhere that you like the look of for the first night or two so that it's not an immediate worry when you get to France. Obviously YMMV depending on whether you're happy to keep moving on or are hoping to spend two weeks in one place.

Many thanks everybody, that's all really helpful.
New question- We're going on the first of June for two weeks, is it still wise to book a site that early in the season?
We never book before second week in July. There's little point; France is a huge country with very many campsites so you might as well follow the weather or just tour until you find somewhere you really like.
We usually go over early June for a couple of weeks and have never booked. We have seen sites get busy over holiday weekends, but as Whitsun is early this year (mid-May, I think) this won't be a problem this year, and it has never stopped us getting a pitch at the site we eventually choose.
Unless you want a specific pitch on a specific site, I would suggest keeping your options open.
We land in Roscoff early on the 1st Sunday of June this year and excitement is building here!
