Depends were you are going, thermoelectric type are OK in the uk for the money, Aldi/Lidl often have them for around £30 and will work on 12v and mains AC, although most only go 20Deg C below ambient at best.
For South of the U.K., I would go for the compressor type, Mobicool FR35 is about the cheapest, but will keep things at Fridge tempreture whatever the ambient is at.
Having said that if you don't need 12/24v capability, have a look at the Mobicool C40 (not B40) which is a compressor fridge, makes no noise and will keep it's set tempreture whatever the ambient, we use ours at home as well as for camping, well worth the £139 we paid back in 2013 from Obelink.

I have my eyes on a Waeco Tropicool TCX 35, for its weight and ability to cool 30 deg C below ambient.
It will not suit South of France at the height of summer, however, I am not going to go camping much above 25 degC as anything about 20 degC is hot enough for me.
Just need a bigger car for it and everything else.
Recently I bought a cheapo cool box from Lidl's for use at home as the fridge part of my fridge/freezer has packed up, and it is doing a fine job.
I am not cooking much at home nowadays, and it is fine for keeping the cream, fruit juice, and odd packs of cooked meat etc. cool below 8 degC.

We have a Mobicool W48 with both mains and 12v cables, really pleased with it after two years use, in fact I have just had it out to clean and check it ready for the summer, all working fine and dandy!
I think for us it is the larger size that works, as we eat a lot of fresh food and vegetables/fruit as well as drink our fair share of lovely chilled wine
Its surprising how much this coolbox can hold, I've been really pleased with it.
