I have read a few reviews on here about the mats and that they are a great job. im going to sound daft but is it comfortable being so close to the ground?
Honestly, yes (depending on which mat you get).
Some people put them on top of campbeds but that's solely to assist with the getting up and down aspect, rather than the comfort.
We'll never go back to an airbed, there's simply no comparison. Over the years, we've had the blue and red canvas type airbeds (where it was a race to get the plug in, before it deflated too much); Campingaz; Makro specials (ended up on the floor every morning); Coleman Comfort; Coleman Pillowtop; Aerobed Active and Aerobed Extreme (after watching the youtube video where the horses trample an inflated mattress). They all either went down or I got backache when using them. And I hated having to use the noisy electric pump to inflate and deflate them. Finally, we bit the bullet and invested in 2 x Dreamtime Comfort XL mats and wow, what a difference!
We also have a Vango Comfort Double 10cm, for visitors, and that's good as well (not as good as the Thermarest and it's more difficult to roll up, but the price is a whole lot better to reconcile!).
A 10cm or 7.5cm Vango Comfort double might be a good place to start, if you fancy a SIM. If you want a big, luxurious bed and you're feeling flush, head straight for the Thermarest Dreamtime XL (2 together make a king size bed).
