Hi everyone... Just checked when I last posted on here and it was 4 years ago when we sold our Caravan. Anyway, looking to get back into camping but really need to persuade the OH.
My son is now 16, daughter is 11 and we have a 7 year old spaniel. Now my lad will probabley no longer wish to spend holidays with us ( unless of course we go abroad and I'm paying !! ) But I need to get the Mrs geared up to it again. Obviously things have changed with gear and tent wise, and I know my OH gets very cold at night so I need to consider a few things in advance before pulling the trigger on purchases.. Now I like big living areas and what with a dog, need something thats going to suit our needs. Any advice would be great especially if anyone has the same situation family wise... Thanks and good to be back ( well nearly back !! )
We use bags very similar to Coleman Vail. More often than not I sleep with the bag unzipped so I can stick my leg out to cool off. They are a bit bulky and cost around 50 quid.
------------- Getting old isn't fun but the alternative is much worse.
You could try somewhere with ready-pitched tents like Overstrand to get the OH back into the spirit, and then splurge on a big polycotton inflatable. They don't save all that much time, but they can be pitched single-handed, i.e. argument-free.
Funnily enough, I started out camping as a kid with the family in a caravan and went to a tent and I'm still in one! And if I (another mortal that gets cold) can survive camping in the NE of Scotland in April when it was snowing and bitter winds, then I guess most can. There are a lot of threads on here with very good advice on camping in the cold. The key thing is insulation under you. Have a read of those threads and work out your plan of action!!

We were in a similar position, camping was fine as long as it was in a c'van with central heating etc. Etc. BUT the epithany came when we splashed out on a Robens Kiowa with wood burner and carpet/rugs etc, now lovely and warm, plus gorgeous home cooked curries and lashings of hot water (old AGA kettle) you may need to splash out on a pup tent for your son tho.
We've got the Vango Aurora double sleeping bag, yes its expensive but really warm even on cold nights. Decent silk thermals and a couple of extra blankets are really useful to take.
