Hello..

Long-time member, but only pop n every so often lol.

I'm just wondering if anyone has any experience of camping with a puppy? She is only 14 weeks old, but I am hoping to go camping in the next couple of weeks, for a weekend, as well as trips throughout August.

I do have a stake, but will need some kind of long lead/rope/chain to attach her to..

A couple of my worries are:
1, she might start whining/howling in the early hours.
2, She might wee in the tent.
3, Someone might steal her overnight.
4, Gernerally worried about everything lol.

Can anyone reassure me it will be ok, or are we doomed to not go until she is a lot older!!!

We use this https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00VKGFBX4/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 to tie up our pup, it's safer than a twisted rope which can twist on itself and tighten in unexpected ways.

If your pup is dry at night at home, there's no reason why she'd start waddling in the tent. It might be easier for you to hear when she's needing a wee because you'll be closer to her and hear her start getting restless and whinging for a wee. If she's crate trained at home and y have room, definitely take it with you.

Excellent I have added that rope to my basket and will have a proper look at it in a minute It looks ideal though.

We don't crate her.
She is 'almost' dry at night. Some nights she will have piddled, but other nights she hasn't... So it is random really. Maybe I should buy a spare tarp and chuck some towels down too. I'm hoping she will settle in her own pod.

She is a complete baby and sticks by my legs like a limpet

We took ours camping at about that age, we had her crate trained and kept her in the porch or in her crate if she was in the main part of the tent.

We had ehu and a fan so she didn't get too cold and put a blanket over her crate to keep her cosy and dark so she didn't wake up too early.

I was worried but she was fine and now enjoys camping. As long as you keep her warm and don't leave her unattended she should be fine and would she not bark her head off or howl if someone strange tried to take her ?

I doubt she would bark, she is much to lazy/chilled.

I hadn't thought about the cold overnight, but thinking about it now I don't think it would be a problem as her breed favours cold climates and dislike the heat.. So thankfully that shouldn't be a problem.

I'm really hoping that by introducing her at a young age she will get used to the camping life quickly.

Of course it could all go horribly wrong. Maybe we should go somewhere fairly local as a trial.

I would be careful about any puppy getting too cold whatever the breed as they can't regulate their temperature like adult dogs - at this time of year it might be just a question of insulating the bottom of the crate and putting a blanket over the top.

Cant imagine having a dog that wouldn't bark if a stranger tried to carry it away - our working cocker would go nuts but she is hyper

Enjoy, I'm sure your pup will have a lovely time.

Very good point about them not being able to regulate their body temp.. I will have to have a think about it as we don't use a crate. Might have to get an oil filled rad for her room.

Thank you.

we have a 10 month old chihauhau that loves camping,
we take puppy pads for through the night and put one down near the door but normally its unused all weekend.
We where worried about her barking but we take her to meet other dogs on site and she is usually ok after that.
The cold has never seemed to be a problem for her when she is curled up in her bed ,normally that tired out she is first to bed and last up the next morning

Just returned from a week in the Forest of Dean camping with our 8month old Jack Russell.
We use a crate in the car for travelling, not only is it safer than him being loose (the seat belt hitch was not a success) we can take the crate out and use in the awning. He has an old bed pillow with cover and a fleece blanket, and we cover the crate at night.

He sleeps in the awning, no issues whatsoever. Snug, his space and safe as he can't escape.

During the day he wears a harness which is attached to a length of cord which has a swivel either end. One end attached to a screw in stake. different lengths of cord are available.

It works for Sam he is a great camping dog.

Don't be put off using a crate, if you start early & get them used to it they will treat it like a kennel & be quite happy, leave it open most of the time then start to close it for short periods.
If your pup is used to it, it will be a great help to you if you need to use it in earnest.

Couldn't agree more, we have a crate at home Sam sleeps in it at night, he escapes to it when the grandchildren come!
We never used a crate for our other JR's over the years, wasn't sure about having one for Sam, but so glad we have. Bought it when he was 8 weeks old and never looked back.

Forgot to mention that having a puppy tethered outside your unit brings children who want to play with pup.
Be firm, the kids can be (and in our case were) a nuisance.

I have two border collies both love camping and seem more relaxed and chilled in the great outdoors. Other dogs barking or people kicking footballs outside our tent upset them so we do have a large windbreaker we put up but always say to our neighbours it is not that we are unfriendly just keeping the dogs safe.
