I have a used Caddy 430 with the high sides which will be used for camping trips only.

I have to say that the prospect of leaving my trailer which has a canvas cover unattended with a few grands worth of kit on board doesn't thrill me ....

I'm way too tight to buy flippin' expensive (and fragile?) ABS lid :)

I'm looking to have a simple folded metal lid made for it with some kind of locking method.

Does anyone have any experience, ideas they could share?

Try a local fabricator that does pick up linings, they often use aluminium checker plate to make cabs for the rear of pick up's.

Of course cost will be the issue, even for a small trailer, you are probably talking North of £500 for a proper job.

I'm only after a drop-on lid with some sort of a hasp I can lock so my camping stuff's not nicked while I have a whiz in the motorway services!

As a fabricator welder my self. Ali checker plate is not cheap. It is ideal for what you need. As It's light weight.
Why not just get the other half to wait in the car and take turns going to the toilet, it's what we normally do before we had our new trailer witch is fitted with a fibreglass lid and lckable

Yep Leeroy, back in 2010 my local fabricator knocked up a "Trailer Tongue Box" in Checker Plate Ali to my drawings, superb job with recessed lid, so that it stays open against the trailer so no need for gas strut, the lid also has a rubber seal which prevents water ingress and the lock on the lid is sunken flush.

That cost £150 at the time, but has become an essential bit of kit on my Trailer, for storing two gas cylinders and other odds and ends, makes for a nice little table when we make a brew stop!

Francais, that sounds really good - do you have any photos?

Leeroy ... if a man in a suit and tie came up to my missus she would not only allow him to nick the trailer, she would probably help him check the trailer lights!

Hi b1, I used to be able to upload photos via the laptop, but then something changed when I went from explorer to chrome, and my photobucket images will not now load on here, same with links as well.

I am told that there is an app for photobucket for the iPad, so I may give that a go when I get a chance.

You could always stand at your rear wheel to have a whizz still legal.
Why not make your own wood frame and marine ply cover ,just to drop over and secure with hasp and staples front and back cover all with tarp roped to upside down coat hooks.

Naturlist - have you seen Homer Simpson's DIY? Cough!

Francais - shame there's no facility to send private messages here, I'd quite like to steal your lid design :)

It's easy to get a 'tounge box built' I built one for our old trailer and still have it for sale. Not sure how to add pics on here.
Go to a local fabricators explain what you want even take the trailer in and hey will design and make one for you.

Yep b1, all I did was Google for photos and line drawings, and then altered the measurements so that I could have a "Trailer Tongue Box" made that was a bespoke fit to my Trailer.

The recessed lid to avoid fowling the Trailer is pretty much a std design on the more expensive TTB's although did not add any extra cost to my build.

You could just buy a std checker plate tool box of the shelf, much cheaper, but they are rectangular in shape, a TTB is a much better fit due to it's triangular shape.

My Box could of course be used on a larger Trailer but not a smaller one, due to the width of the Box, if that makes any sense.

Couldn't you make a lid from marine ply and battens ? I did this to
My trailer also made the sides deeper the same way, it's now 6' x 4'
X 30 inches deep holds a lot of stuff.
