So we are planning an almost wild camp next weekend....
Within fifteen minutes drive are a few camping caravan sites, is it acceptable to ask to use their showers (I would pay)
Is this a done thing at all?

I know of one place in Ireland that does it. They are, however, geared up as a starting point for tackling Ireland's highest peak and provide parking and a cafe and a place for walkers. Camping is an extra. The showers are a Euro a pop.
Cronin's yard. I'll be there next month.

I suppose its no different to going in a cafe with your own fish & chips and saying I will pay for the use of the table.

No harm in asking, the worst they can say is no. We only do overnight wild camps and shower once home. Wetwipes help in the mean time! If we went on a multi day wild camp we'd camp near rivers or streams for our washing needs.

I guess, drinking the devil's Advocaat, one could argue that a fair number of you doing it regularly (daily?) at peaks times, might just wind up the (full) paying guests?
Depends entirely on numbers (of you and of campers on site, as well as the showers themselves) of course, and ultimately, I can't see any harm in asking the site owner/warden, and see what they say.
They might even be generous enough to allow you to use them without charge... although I strongly suggest a little charity donation, should that be the case.

Go ask... and let us know the outcome.
No need to "name and shame" the site though if they refuse... it is their prerogative, when all said and done!

... Failing that... is there a car wash nearby?

The C&CC have a scheme for loo emptying, shower use without staying the night. Shown as motorhome stop off in their fees. Not sure if you need to be a member though.

Some motorway services have showers, or google truck stops.
When wild camping in the Hebrides lots of the island ferry ports had showers and toilet emptying points.

A lot of people get annoyed with having to use codes or cards to enter the toilet /shower block.

We stayed at one site on the West coast of Scotland where they had to introduce code entry because the showers and toilets were being used by a lot of people from the site next door which had poor facilities.

This caused queues sometimes and an increase in there bills for heating the water etc!

I would imagine they are not the only site that has experienced this.

Witnessed this ourselves... site up the road, apparently with poorer facilities than the one we were on. Our site was in two parts anyway, (The showers were over the road from our field). I arrived at the showers to find the site owner demanding they come out... now! (There was a small queue by now) and it turned out they (the "intruder") thought it was all one site, as they were only a hundred yards apart!

Pfft! A likely story!

Oh... just remembered... and SHE was in the mens showers.
I guess the ladies' door was closed properly, as both doors did indeed have a number pad to gain entry!

Well, VM... When I said there was a small queue by the time I got there, what I meant was it was a short queue... but very wide! I think they call it a scrum in some parts?
I could't get anywhere near!

She did sound exotic though... An Eastern European twang, if I'm not mistaken!

I you considered using public swimming baths, you don't need to swim, just pay and then use the showers
