One of the worst campsites that l have ever seen who allowed 'sardine' packed in camping was one belonging to a large national chain of family holiday providers, on the north east coast. It was in high season, and it was hard to find a tent where the guy lines didnt cross with those of the neighbours.
The site was so packed that they had hired portaloos to try and cope with the numbers, but even these were filthy and overflowing onto the floors of the cubilcles. We were staying on a local CL at the time, but went to find a couple of tent pitches so that our daughters could join us for a few days, but expected far better standards from such a large national company, who quite frankly should have known better.
I shudder to think what would have happened if a spark from a bbq or carelessly discarded cigarette end had set off a small fire in the area, the site was clearly breeching all the fire regs and was only bothered about making as much profit as possible whist they could.
Needless to say, we did not stay, and booked our girls onto a smaller privately owned site a few miles down the coast.

August Bank Holiday 2014 had booked pitch with EHU on independent site also 2 other pitches next to us without EHU. Arrived and saw that part of the end of site had been cordoned off - but that 3 pitches were reserved for us.
Went to get shopping and on return found that people had arrived and moved the cordon, entrapping us in 'their' space, 2 tents had been erected. We then had a visit from one of the tent owners who told us we had pitched in the wrong place, they always book same area for around 15 tents, large central camp fire and community tent, coming down every year for a number of years.
We were on 'their patch'! and now behind 'their' cordon. I asked for them to move the cordon to allow us free movement, explaining that we had booked and had been allocated the pitches by the owner. The young woman was a little unpleasant.
As the area filled up with families, cars and tents our hearts sank - they pitched with their guy ropes over our three units, made it impossible for us to get the cars near and generally hemmed us in deliberately.
We complained to the owner, and to his credit he came down and was very straight with them, one person was difficult to which he gave them ultimatum.
We spent the next three days crammed in, subject to glares and body language hostility. Very unpleasant.
This year we camped on another site in our unit, another pitch had a unit on some distance away from us, on chatting they said they always met up with a large group on another site but were miffed because having always had a large cordoned off area for years, the site owner had booked others onto 'their space'. Needless to say I kept quiet!
Some of the newer camping fraternity lacks respect and consideration, its sad.
Never again will we go away over Bank Holidays.

At Glenridding some years ago, we virtually had the tent field to ourselves for a few days. Then we went out all day on the Friday and returned about 8.30 to find that we couldn't get the car within 50' of our tent.
Tents were crammed in like at a festival, guy ropes criss-crossed with those from neighbouring tents, and scarcely room to walk between tents in some places. Our new neighbours were all nice though, and we still had room to sit and cook outside, so we didn't kick off about it.
Come Sunday afternoon, they all disappeared and we had the place to ourselves again.
The fire thing does scare me though. It completely puts me off festival camping.

You'd think it'd be a safer bet to opt for a campsite where pitches are defined by hedges. However, on a trip to Cornwall some years ago, we were allocated an internal corner pitch, meaning the entrance was effectively the corner area of a square pitch.
When new campers arrived on the large adjacent pitch (which had one side fully open to the road/track around the site) they parked their car on the grass verge area in front of the boundary hedge, effectively blocking half the access to our pitch. When our own car was parked on our pitch, we had no view out at all, and had to sidle in-between the cars to get out.
It was one of the most expensive sites we've ever stayed on.
