I posted this in the wrong forum so I have reposted it in here: I'm back to camping under canvas after a few years away and will be camping locally this weekend as an equipment test for going to France early September.
What put me off camping was increasingly uncomfortable nights sleep with constant air bed issues. So I have searched threads on here for the best solution and, based on what I read, I have ordered and received an Outwell double camp bed. I'm going to make it cosy with a sleeping bag and mattress topper and take my duvet and pillows - all as suggested on various threads on here.
So if I don't get a good nights sleep, I'll blame you lot!
Update: It's not going well....we took it out of the bag last night at home and glad we did! We unfolded it and one corner looked wrong, on further inspection it appears it hadnt been welded right ie two bits were not attached. - we looked at the other welds and they were OK. So will be taking it back to the nearest shop today - Shrewsbury - for a replacement. We will then travel back to Rutland where I have booked a pitch for the night and give the bed a thorough testing. Fingers crossed.
Hi Missmally, before we motorhomed and caravaned we had an outwell bear lake 6 ( great tent, didn't move hardly in gales) and we found a coleman double air bed with individually inflated sides gave us the best nights sleep. When one of you moved or got out it didn't affect the opposite side with a rock and roll ( Rock and Roll) effect. That was our experience anyway. We had all the additional stuff which helped and we didn't over inflate the bed. I suppose you could use two individual beds side by side, but it's not the same is it. Hope you get it sorted.
You can't beat a double Outwell posadas with SIM on top - followed by a fitted sheet to hold it together and then 2 sleeping bags zipped together. Never had a bad nights sleep - so go get it replaced! You won't regret it!

Kampa bliss double arriving today and will be tested next weekend. We will be using the force 10 mk3. Our double airbed (with individual chambers) is too high to fit. A double camp bed would be impossible and our single mats have been banned for this trip.
If it works well, I may get rid of the large airbed. Got to think of boot space.

We ended up replacing camp beds with a double Outwell Posada SIM and testing it at the The Wingfield Campsite, Montford Bridge near Shrewsbury (review submitted but with a pub on site I would obviously recommend it). I put a sleeping bag on top with a fitted quilted sheet. Snuggled up in our duvet and blanket we survived the coldest night of the Summer but I think SIM needed a little more air in it and a memory foam topper would make it perfect. Certainly the most comfortable night yet :-)
We take a roll up futon memory mattress with us. Takes up a lot of room in the car but does make for a good nights sleep! Nothing else I can sleep on the doesn't hurt my back
This is a subject dear to my heart as I suffer from a stiff back and problematic hips. We have tried everything from air mattresses to camp beds, very expensive sims and this summer resorted to 1 queen sized 2.5 cm mattress topper on top of a 4 inch thick memory foam mattress topper on top of 2 sims. I was comfy, my sim is the fancy outwell one (not slippy) but hubby had a Coleman slightly narrower and slipper sim. His kept sliding around and he would fall through the middle! So, for our 2nd trip to France I gave another long think. Having spent a small fortune on bedding this year I really didn't want to go too expensive. So, I bought a queen sized (velour topped) air mattress from argos which will serve as the Base of our bed with the 2 mattress toppers on top...here is hoping. Incidentally, we transport the 2 toppers rolled up together and tied up with those very strong bungee type holders, all wrapped up in our brown tarp and strapped to the roof of the car next to the roof box. It resembles a giant pooh..or scarily, we worried someone might think we had a corpse on top of the car..but Noone batted an eye at us..not even in Calais!!
