Hello everyone and thanks for having me.

Would like to draw on any experiences under (proper :P) canvas. And firstly sorry im sure youve had a few similar posts.

Looking at trying to get close to a 'traditional' camp set up if there is such a thing. Been using modern tents all my life and understand the benefits but kipping under canvas takes me back to scouting days and being in military tents. Everything we currently have is modern. Im thinking skillets and tripod cooking. Ive always taken the light and fast options but thinking the new baby it might be worth setting up camp.

Budget is restricted (isnt it always?!) and might have around £1000 to get a full set up.

So looking for 4m bell tent (think it should be suitable size wise but not been in one, thats a question anyone know of anywhere in lancashire that might have some on display? Or as near as possible)

Would like a tent stove

Proper cast iron set

Not after too much of a glamp set up more british cavalry set up if that makes sense.

Any help? Anyone convince me to take a different route.

Very aware weight is going to be a big issue but camping will be long weekends or weeks at a time and will always have the car.

I like making things too, so already planning some form of old suitcase shelf system and kitchen/pantry box.

Hope i havent waffled too much, looking forward to having a good read around!

Hi we have a 5m bell tent and a Touareg, both canvas. We use the bell tent in warmer months and the touareg in autumn/winter as less air to warm (we use ehu). We love them both! We got a new puppy in december and he's had 2 camping trips this summer both in the bell tent. How many people will be sleeping in the bell tent? I don't have a stove but it will take up space, especially if you have baby and dog you may need a fire guard, so maybe the 5m would be better. My youngest learnt to crawl while camping, too many exciting things in her reach had her off! If you ever Leeds way when its dry you can have a look.

Sorry i wrote it a few times including various bits of information and then deleted it. It will be 2 adults, baby and a dog.

Put off the 5m one because everything seems to suggest its needs a lot of warming up.

Fire guard will be a must, oh wont leave the washing machine on when we go out in case we get back and the dog is swimming (shes quite panicy and ive learnt its just easier to please her). Shes also from leeds, its a very kind offer, thank you.

The style isnt a major thing but im pretty set on canvas.

If you have the fire you will have no problem warming a 5m up. They don't really get discounted and there are a lot of variables such as thickness of canvas, SIG, PIG or ZIG (would recommend ZIG) and other things like metal or wooden pole.

I like military history and am always keen to get my hands of 'campaign' furniture, I have one lovely military desk at home where the legs are attached with butterfly nuts - not portable enough for camping but you get the idea. Have a nosy at some pics

You will be lashing pieces of wood together to keep your kit off the floor i assume? works well and is free.....enjoy your vintage camping, you cant beat it dx

So has "Campuser" bought a tent and stove, which was it and how have things gone?

Very excited as a Blacks Solace 1: the 4 metre bell tent, arrives tomorrow, complete with an awning. Might have to wait awhile though before it goes up for weathering....

Yes, how did it go, Campuser?
In your shoes I might have had a look at some of the canvas ridge tents, too.

For making stuff, but not quite bushcraft, google Chuck Boxes. The Americans do a great line in DIY shelf and box systems which fit neatly together for travel.

And join the Dutch Pot thread and tell us how you got on with the tripod etc.
