When we go camping, it's just the two of us, a small van and our 3 man (Gelert Chinook) tent. We could do with an extra, inexpensive shelter to erect next to the van for sun shade and somewhere to sit when it rains. The tent and van are too cramped and not suitable for this.

Would a gazebo, with or without sides, be the best thing for our needs? Would one be robust enough for camping and being put up and taken down many times? Any recommendations for specific models? Or is there something more suitable?

Please. Not a gazebo.
Our Coleman Caucasus was hit by a flying gazebo in high winds. My wife and daughter were sleeping at the time. Luckily the gazebo poles didn't pierce the tent but the weight bent an alloy pole which had to be replaced. Many sites ban gazebos as they are like kites and cause a lot of damage.
Better to get a tarp, kitchen tent or an event shelter.

Gazebos are usually banned on sites. At the very least you'll not be popular with your neighbours - a gazebo taking off in wind will do a nice job of the paintwork on your car...or someone elses...

I can see why you are looking for a bit of extra covered space though. What about a tarp?

Look up a couple of threads on here using the search function. Tarp Origami is one. There's another one called '2014 the year of the tarp'. There's a tarp thread live at the moment too. I think you'd get a lot more use out of a tarp because you could pitch it directly over your van too. There's lots of variables for using a tarp and a couple of poles and some people (me included) enjoy pottering about with it.

What sort of van? We fitted a Fiamma awning to ours & have the sides & front to add to that if needed. I also have a setup with the backdoors open with a basha bungeed over the top

People should clarify gazebo and camping shelter. We've used the Quechua camping shelter (http://www.decathlon.co.uk/camping-shelter-with-doors-3mx3m-fresh-id_8353348.html) and with the sides zipped up and properly pegged down it's extremely stable.

Only with the sides on it. Without the sides, it is just like any gazebo. As for pegging down, a lot of people don't bother with guying out their tent properly, let alone a gazebo/shelter.
With a tarp, you can take it down quickly and if it does fly away the only harm it will cause is tryout dignity.

Aldi or Lidl did have tarps / shelters in stock for about £15 a few weeks ago. I use one from decathlon.....it is big enough for table and 4 people to sit round and also space for cooking. It is easy to put up and also to dry out once home if you need to. As it packs up quite small I always take it now...just in case it's needed.   With the yeti having roof bars, I tie the tarp to that sometimes. I've added a few tarp clips to my tool kit and some bungy cord loops with hooks on as they increase my options when building the shelter.

I have a dd and a cheap chinese tarp. I picked up an aldi one a few weeks ago having owned one before. This year's model webbing failed after two days. I had to use clingons.
Spirit burner's suggestion of a van awning may be your best bet.

We bought a HiGear Dome Shelter from GoOutdoors this year and used it for the first time. I was very impressed, stood up well in the wind and was nice to sit out in on a night, or to have lunch, etc in. It has mesh on all four sides, two of which open up. One word of warning though, rain does come through the mesh!
