Thinking about next summer. Planning a two site holiday but both in opposite dierections from home. Both will take 3-3.5 hours to get to from home but there will be a 5+ hour drive between the two.

I never do things the easy way

Not mad at all, purplebean, last summer we went from Bedford to Cornwall, then all the way up to Glencoe, then on to the isle of Skye, then Gairloch and finally back home all the way to Bedford, perfectly normal in my book...

Nope, Purplebean, almost every w/end trip for me involves 6+ hour trips. Go for it!

This year we went from home (Manchester) to Cornwall for a week then back up to Oxfordshire for the second part of our holiday with a family sized 6 man tent & full kit.

We packed everything away, left Cornwall at 10am, arrived in Oxfordshire about 6 hours later (held up due to an accident at Bristol) & put it all back up again.

Apart from being held up the drive in the middle was fine as we were still relaxed & in holiday mode. Packing away in Cornwall was quick - we weren't worried about everything being in the right place because it was all going back up a few hours later. And putting everything back up was easy.

We'd definitely do it again. A week's all action & loads of activities followed by total relaxation all in one holiday.

You have always struck me as being a well organised sort of person purps, (but I am usually wrong ) so no you are not mad. Nothing wrong with looking forward to something you enjoy, and being able to do it with the ones you love. Does your lad (sorry I dont know his name) sit with you and give his input on places to go because I notice he seems to have a good time when with you and hubby. We tend to wait until the colder weather sets in before looking at next years breaks. Just seems to perk us up a bit on a dark damp evening, looking at sunny pictures of places we want to see the following year. Big decision to make this year for us... Do I hold on to this car, which is the ideal camping car. Or if I change car, do I get another "camping" car or a car I really want, which would obviously effect the type of camping we do. Decisions, decisions!

Not mad... you can always pop home for anything you've forgotten en route and savour that 'going on holiday' feel twice

Tentaddict, Cornwall to Glencoe far beats what I am thinking of, respect

Ficklejade I am guessing yours always involveds ferries as well

Adsheadv, sounds as if you did something similar, our first week will be full of outings and the second full of beach (if we get the weather)

Geoff I am the woman of many lists, hyperorganised i already have three weekends booked, two this year and one next, but it is never too early to start planing. Davey doesn't really get involved in the planning as long as there is some history in the holiday he enjoys himself

Bridgey see my reply to Geoff, with all my lists we never forget anything OK rarely

OK PB, respect ... change of clothes???? Drop off the dirty washing? Water the plants???

Or forget it, drive past (albeit at a few miles distant) and onto the next bit, enjoying the realisation you still have one more week to go

One person's madness is another's considered chaos.

Yes, PB, ferries involved. Despite extra mileage, I tend to use Fishnish - Lochaline (16 minutes) and Corran (5 mins), both non-bookable, than Craignure (book in half an hour beforehand) and a 46 minute crossing. I also almost without failure find myself on the last line to get off the ferry in Oban so end up crawling all the way through to Crianlarich!

Like your lists, careful consultation of the timetable, weather, planned roadworks, footie matches (if heading via Glasgow) and rush hours, both Glasgow and Edinburgh, are vital for me both ways - remember I'm stuck with a ferry deadline at the other end. No m-ways until I hit Stirling if heading SE or the Erskine Bridge if heading to D&G or Carlisle and whichever route there's a lot of slow sections before the motorway. So, whether Oban or Corran, I work on 2.5 hours (without stops, say 2.45 with) to the Erskine bridge and 3 to Stirling.I may be lucky and do it in less, but not in the main tourist season. You can do this, with your planning skills (I'm renowned for ALWAYS forgetting something!!)

tentaddict - awesome respect! Decades ago (before A1M) did NE corner of Essex to Edinburgh in a oner but much younger and had the incentive that my Dad had been seriously injured - he made it and lived another 20 odd years, passing away at 97. I would not deal with that trip now!
