Hi All,

I have reserved a pitch at Easwell Camp Site near Woolacombe.
The pitch is a 'Super Pitch' which is an all weather pea gravel pitch.

I have never camped on a pitch of this type and I'm now having second thoughts.

Has anyone camped at Easwell on one of these type of pitches and what are your thoughts?

Has anyone camped on a similar pitch and what are your thoughts?

We have an Outwell Montana 6 with footprint and front extension. We also like to erect a wind screen across the front opening.

Have camped with trailer tent a couple of times on all weather pitch.

I always put a couple of very heavy duty groundsheets (340gram / sqm) down as precaution even though trailer tent has very thick groundsheet itself better to be safe than sorry in my opinion.

All weather pitches are great in wet weather having suffered liquid mud a couple of times when hit by bad weather.

Hi Adders
We have stayed on a hard pitch at the Old Oaks a few times.They supply a thick groundsheet which we have found ok with no damage to the footprint or Sig.If the weather is wet no mud inside the porch.

Hi All,

Thank you for the replies.

The site doesn't provide additional groundsheet so I would have to provide one.

They also recommend rock pegs. I would assume that all the pegs have to be replaced!? Similarly for the windbreak...

Startting to think I might change my booking

I have never used an all weather pitch but when pea shingle is mentioned I would certainly shy away from it. I have used pea shingle at various homes I have lived in as a cheap pathway or to make rough areas in the garden look more presentable. It is actually awful stuff and gets trodden everywhere.

Peas shingle comes from the ocean bed and unless thoroughly cleaned it contains traces of sea salt, but more importantly, it contains sharp edged shells and sharp grit which stick into anything it comes into contact with like shoe soles, car tyres...and tent ground sheets.

I would want a very thick tarpaulin underneath my tent if I had to erect it on pea shingle and that tarpaulin would have to be the correct size so it does not stick out beyond the tent and catch all the rainwater and is not too small as to leave parts of the tent groundsheet vulnerable.

All weather pitches could be made with better materials such as smooth round stones, wood chippings or even astroturf but of course that costs far more than pea shingle.

If you have any weight bearing furniture with legs, eg campbeds, chairs, then put something underneath the legs as they tend to rub the groundsheet against the pea gravel. Pringles lids or caster holders are good.

We have stayed twice on a all weather pitch (pea gravel) both times e have used a heavy blue tarpaulin under our foot print groundsheet, then the zip in ground sheet of the tent. Never had a problem with it.
Always made sure we walk around the pitch Andy pick up and remove any sharp or larg stones that are there before we even set up a ground sheet. We also use rock pegs on any pegging points that are on the stones, as many as possible suck as guide ropes I try and pull out another so that they reach the surrounding grass and use normal pegs in those points.

Thank you for the replies.
Just to confirm,

So, any pegs that go into the gravel have to be rock pegs? E.g. Not just main pegging points.

and ideally I need 2 footprints under my sewn in groundsheet?

We've only ever used normal pegs on the all weather pitches we've stayed on.

We stayed at sandy balls in the new forest there was no chance of driving a normal tent peg into the stoned part of the pitch so it all depends on where the pitch is ask when booking your pitch if they're advise on use it rock pegs for a ten on a all weather pitch!!
