I have a couple of friends with autistic kids one of which is violent towards her and himself. I'm amazed how they cope and it makes me so grateful for my relatively 'normal' kids.
If it makes you feel better introduce yourself to your neighbours- campers on the whole are friendly folk & appreciate a chat.
I think you'll have a fabulous time - my friends with autistic kids take them camping and they cope fine.

Once we were pitched we were warned by some neighbours that the family 'over there' were noisy (4 tents away). The child had night terrors, which happened in the wee small hours. We heard it every night and had to go back to sleep. Our 3 small ones didn't even wake up.
The main problem from the family was their other children and the rowing parents during the day over who should look after them. It was definitely rowing and not 'a barney'.
Conclusion - screaming child not really an issue.

I took my niece camping many times. She has learning disabilities and has humongous meltdowns, but they are unpredictable. I found fellow campers to be kind and understanding. The one time she kicked up a major hoolie over some earphones that weren't working, I had to hold her with a pillow to stop her head-banging on the rather hard floor, and the lovely couple in the next tent did a great job of distracting her in a timely way with their cute dog and she soon snapped out of it.
And if I am your neighbour I will extend similar neighbourliness to you. And I have earplugs so I could sleep through Armageddon!!

We did it !!! we had a fantastic time , i spoke to our neighbours and they were great , very happy and kind . Simon coped amazingly well with it all , didnt cause a rumpus even at 3am when i was changing his sleeping bag or at midnight the following night when woken by someone pumping up an air bed with an electric pump .
he wandered and did his own thing , listened to his dvds or played on his tablet in the tent , came out to see people when it suited him and hid when it didnt !
saturday night he put himself to be at 630 he was so shattered and slept for 11 hours .
we have plans to go again.
Brilliant news, glad it was a success!
