Hi Folks,

So I've been lurking around the forum a wee bit but now that we have bought our 1st bigger tent (Vango Woburn 500) for the two of us and the dog we have some questions.

We don't like walking around on the bare floor of the tent so are looking for a carpet. Are there any good thick ones that will protect the tent from dog and camping chairs?

Also, now we have a bigger tent our wee car isn't quite big enough. I've looked at trailers but the car can't officially have one fitter which only leaves a roof box. Will a roof box give plenty of space? It's a ford ecosport we have so boot isn't the biggest lol.

I used a large PVC-baxked picnic blanket as tent carpet in the living area in the past and it worked very well.

Now I am using a large awning carpet that is similar in appearance to those nonstick mats. It works, however dirt can fall through the holes, so I bought a small vacuum cleaner to clean up before packing the tent away.

As for roof box, a big one can have a larger volume/capacity than a small trailer. Therefore get the biggest one that would fit the car would be my advice.

There is a Vango Universal carpet that apparently fits here

However, I would sooner go for PVC backed picnic rugs which will be a fraction of the price and made from the same material as most dedicated tent carpets. Something like this

In actual fact I presently have a Vango Universal carpet in my tent which I bought very cheaply in a sale. It's not bad but I still prefer picnic rugs. Picnic rugs come in various qualities and sizes and you might find it easier and cheaper to buy two and overlap them although careful you don't trip where they overlap.

Incidentally, I get all my camping gear in a Nissan Micra but no room for the wife...seems to work ok

You don't mention using a footprint under your tent but if not I would recommend you get one to help protect the tent groundsheet and gives added insulation. You can buy one specifically for your tent or just a tarpaulin cut to size (or cut just less than the size of the tent base so water doesn't drip onto it and run back underneath the tent).

If it's just two of you and a dog a roof box should be fine. You'll need to check how much load your roof will take.
When you do pack it remember light and bulky stuff goes in the box as far as possible.

It seems the Woburn 500 is very close in size to the Vango Icarus 500 sold by GoOutdoors, who sell a carpet for it. However, at over £60 for the carpet I think I'd agree with the above comments regarding picnic blanket as an alternative.

Hi,

Thanks for the replies. I managed to get a carpet for my tent and a footprint in a deal with the tent so quite happy :-)

I'm still going to look at these picnic blankets though as would be good for a sleeping area.

The car is fiesta sized so been looking at a medium sized roof box as any bigger and it will be like transporting a canoe haha!

To be fair we don't travel very heavy. We are used to a small 2/3 man tent for wild camping etc. Seems to be mostly dog stuff.

Looking forward to our next camping trip now :-)

Weirdly, they don't do tent carpets for the sleeping areas, so a look at the picnic blankets is a good idea, for in there.

Further down the line, if you find you prefer "proper" tent carpets, it's worth keeping an eye out for winter camping sales.
I once picked up two identical carpets for the living area of a completely different tent for something like £20 the pair.
One covered 90% of our 4 berth bedroom, and the pair together (overlapped) covered our complete 6 berth bedroom. Bargain!


The Roof Box Co... is a firm favourite in these 'ere parts.
I can recommend them myself, but I'm rarely alone on that score.

I'll second that. We bought our roofbox from them and had a little blip with the hinges/struts, which they sorted out quickly and without quibble. They are a really excellent company to deal with and I'm more than happy to recommend them!

I have a few carpets,but hunt around online for bargains. Got a large vango one for £15 in Go Outdoors. They usually have a shelf with returns etc and saw it on there. Person had brought it back in wrong bag! But, large picnic rugs work a treat. Halfords do one at moment £10 and its extra large, I bought 2, great for bedrooms

Halfords blankets are huge. Two cover my Alaska living area and two in the bedroom pod.
I did buy a couple for spares end of last year for £8 each.
