Hi I'm thinking of just taking off with my 2 young kids up to Scotland.
Is it still possible to turn up at a site and book in. Also any advice of camping on my own with 2 young ones.
I've been camping on and off for years but always looking for others advice, to make life easier. Many thanks
yes you can just turn up at a site, depending on when you go, ie if it's during the week probably be OK, maybe not at weekend as it'll be a lot busier. If that's what you fancy doing maybe choose a few sites and jot down the addresses and phone numbers just in case you can't stay at the site you fancy , then at least you can decide where to go from there.
Thank you, might book up for the first site, and will do what you suggest about writing down site addresses.
Need a smaller tent that I can put up myself. I like sewn in groundsheets but no idea what to look for. Know there are many experts on here who can point me in the right direction
Hi Sahara, I'm a single mum and I go camping with my 2 year old, I find tunnel tents easiest to put up by myself and have a large 3 person one for us both. My main things were over 4000 waterproofing and sewn in groundsheet. Go outdoors have a sale on at the moment x
Personally, I do not like to take chances and just turn up at a camp site and hope they have a pitch available.
Definitely NOT during school holidays and weekends, especially when the weather is good.
And I do not have a child, just a dog!
Each to their own, of course.
Good luck if that's what you decide to do.

Sahara refers to going "up to Scotland" so presumably resides in (northern?) England with children (assuming they're of school age) being off school until early September, whereas the Scottish autumn terms AFAIK start from mid-August, so going in late August should mean there's less need to book in advance?

I agree with the tunnel tent. I have also fond that booking is definitely required if hook-up is needed.
Personally would always try and book ahead in school hols - we had a nightmare trying to book at a week's notice a couple of weeks back - everywhere was full.
If it's during school hols bookin first, or you may have a long drive. Check out wing hall near Rutland Water fab place safe and nice walks and bike around the reservoir lots of pubs for food.
