Sorry if this is in the wrong post or been asked before only just signed up!
So we're taking our 1 year old camping with us next weekend, I'd like to keep going at least until October half term if possible.
My questions are:
- what should baby sleep on? I think a travel cot would be too big and bulky, and a pop up one she would just roll over as very active. Should I let her sleep on the floor, if I put a fleece blanket on the ground? Can I put her on a ready bed?
- what should she sleep in? Gro bag?
We're also taking our five year old but he will be on an air bed and sleeping bag. As will me and partner will be.
Just a note of caution on babies and anything inflatable - be aware of the suffocation risk due to the soft surface and airtight material.
Anyhow, on the less hysterical side... we just used a SIM next to us with a couple of fleece blankets around it and under it. If they rolled off, that wasn't much of a bother and we'd shift them back on.
Having said that, a SIM is almost as bulky to pack as a travel cot!
If I had a baby too big for a moses basket but not old enough for an air bed it would have to be a travel cot as they are designed for babies sleeping in. Their safety is most important. What does the baby sleep in at home? Duvet, blankets, grobag? You can use the same for camping, just make sure its well insulated under the bed as the ground will be cold and perhaps an extra blanket for on top if needed..
We put our son at that age on a foam rollmat; insulated from the ground, firm for sleeping on and nothing to fall off. We just needed to be aware what he might roll into or crawl over to. As for what to sleep in we had a long sleeved vest and babygrow (his winter pajamas) and the thicker of his gro bag sleeping bags (2.5 tog). My daughter had a similar set up recently at 10 months and when she was cold in the night I just put her fleece jumper on over the babygrow and sleeping bag. Hope you can find something that suits you and that you have a good trip.
We are going tomorrow and my nearly 14mth old is sleeping in his travel cot its going in the car even if i have to lose something else as he rolls around all night. Plan is to put him in his normal gro bag with suitable pjs and vest his gro bag has arms too so should be warm enough.
Thank you for all your replies. Taken it all on board. I've just spent loads on camping equipment so not too keen on spending even more. I've seen a second hand koo-di which I will look at tomorow. It looks like it will do the trick.
I think I will put her in her grobag, will 2.5 tog be sufficient enough with a all in one under neath and vest? I'm worried she will over heat! At least I can adjust accordingly.
We took both our children camping at 1 years old, we used a single air bed with a fluffy blanket on top then a sheet wrapped round it, put the child in PJ's (or two sets if it was really cold) a grow bag to stop them rolling about too much then a blanket / duvet on top. Generally found if they where too cold they would wake up and scream at you and if they where too hot they would wake up and scream at you.
Or eldest is now seven but after our last trip I am considering putting her back in a grow bag, 7 nights we stayed and every night she rolled off the air bed.
Wish you luck and hope you have a good time camping.
May be too late... sorry. But i'd say a travel cot is a must. We've taken our kids camping from being 6 months old and have a very compact travel cot which fits inside our 4 man tent fine - along with us and our older daughter's bed. It's a 'Phil and teds' brand and great for kids up to about 2 1/2. Really small and compact. Definitely worth getting one second hand, if you can. Keeps them enclosed and slightly off the ground too, which keeps them warmer.
My kids sleep in a set of long sleeved thermals (really cheap on Amazon), then pjs then a thin fleecy onesie. Socks if it's particularly cold. When little they then went in a 2.5 tog grow bag, but now they are older in a normal sleeping bag. Extra blankets if it is cold. Layering is good. As is a decent bed (we use SIMs) so they not on the cold ground or air bed which trap cold air. They do roll off all over the place though, even now at almost 6 and 3. I usually tuck a blanket over them and under the sim to try and keep them in place but doesn't work.
I've got a two year old and wouldn't want to use anything but a travel cot for him. It's one part of a familiar environment for him and means I can sleep happy he is not rolled on the floor or wandering round the tent!
For sleeping in last weekend he had a long sleeve vest, pyjamas and two grow bags. He still asked to come for a cuddle to warm up at one point and he doesn't normally feel the cold. But approaching dawn in Brecon with a clear night it was pretty cold despite being August (around 6 degrees, only a few degrees off frost!)
One other thing I found essential was our Ikea high chair to keep him in when I was cooking and putting up the tent.
