so we have our first long camp starting at the weekend. Cornwall, snowdonia and the peak district.
We hadn't forgotten about heating and have looked at a few options but don't really have time to get to a shop before we leave.
We have a 2000watt convector heater at home which we bought one year after running out of heating oil!!
Its free standing and not huge and is thermostatically controlled. We obviously wouldn't leave it on during the day when out.
Would this be ok to use? otherwise my husband has 3000wat fan heater in his warehouse but i think this is a bit to powerful!
Depending on the supply available at the site you might struggle with power – you’ll need about 8 or 9A to run the 2kW heater, which might be a stretch for some smaller sites. Best checking what power is available at the site!
Always a good idea to pack an extra jumper just in case!
We use a small oil filled radiator from Argos (£20 i thank)
It's brilliant, it takes the chill out of the air and has a built in thermostat so we leave it on all nite. We also have a fan heater which I see good for instant heat ifs to cold.
We've always used a convector heater, they chuck out a decent amount of heat and are silent unlike a fan heater. In fact we used it one easter surrounded by snow and we were super toasty inside!
We have a low wattage halogen heater. It heats up the tent well and we can use it on 6amp supplies.

I'm investigating decent electric underblankets to put on an air bed with a view to having one underneath the carpet in the living space. There are electric rugs on places like Amazon & Ebay which may also work well by being more ruggeded. These will work much like a night storage heating putting out a low level but constant heat with the added benefit it can heat from the ground up thus reducing the chance of having warm body cold feet.
So far a 150W kingsize whilst putting out lots of heat packed up quickly, a 110W kingsize put out a little less heat and also packed up quickly, both in around a week, so am currently testing a 70w Kingsize which is actually not as big as the previous two, but claims to have an overheat protection built in but is not washable unlike the first two. The risk with electric underblankets on the air mattress is they heat it up to such an extent seams might come unglued where glue has been used. These are also cheap < £25 blankets and not the more expensive temperature controlled electric underblankets which are going for > £50.
I'll probably be moving onto to electrically heated rugs next as I would expect them to be more robust but weight and size is a consideration when packed in the back of a car which is why I started with electric underblankets.
Our electric blanket when it's chilly is on number one all night, and to warm the bed up on 2 or 3.
Its only a double and just keeps the chill off so you don't wake up cold in the middle of the night, OH is always cold even if it's baking outside he has a jumper on grrr
It depends on the size of your tent and how cold the weather is. In a large tent a convector heater has to heat a large mass of cold air which is continually being lost through the material and replenished with more cold air. It may struggle. In a smaller tent it may be ok.
I started off with a convector heater in a small dome tent and found it did the job well. When I changed to a larger family tent on a particularly cold night I might as well not have had a heater as it didn't heat very well at all.
A fan heater on the other hand immediately heats air and re-circulates it around the tent very quickly so is far more effective in larger spaces. The compromise is the noise if you leave it on at night. It can be left on thermostat but will keep kicking in when the temperature drops which is likely to wake you up if you are a light sleeper.
We use fan heaters which have thermostats and click on if it gets too cold in the night. They do make a soft noise but nothing to keep me awake and are very good.
We're returning to camping after a few years out and just bought a new little tent for us, we can't find our little fan heater we bought before and so I was wondering if my Dyson hot and cold would work. It's 2kw but there are 10 heat settings, I would keep it the lowest I could get away with . I've asked the camp site where we will possibly go to try it out their amps, but have had no reply yet.
Any one think it'll be ok?
