Booking an independent tent camping trip (ferry, hotel stays, campsite and return trip etc) to France.
Has anyone any experience with Travel insurance to cover any eventualities ? (i.e ferry failure, campsite closure, equipment stolen, car breakdown, delays, medical emergencies etc)
I have made some enquiries regarding a multi-trip insurance package (for independently arranged travel), which does offer some of those eventualities but does not specifically talk about camping under canvas.
We just take out "Holiday Safe" (Martin Lewis) annual cover, as it can work out cheaper than say cover for one specific month, as mad as that may seem.
Last time that went camping in France was 2015, and the couple's policy was £23 mad not to have really, especially the medical cover bit.
Otherwise the cover is just general holiday cover, more aimed at those flying, but as a self drive tent camper, a lot of the policy still applies.
Of course you want seperate breakdown cover for the car, but that's another story.
You need to take out car breakdown cover separately. If you have cover for UK then your provider will upgrade it to continental cover for extra cost. Also ensure your car insurance includes comprehensive cover for continent. If it does not already then you can add it for small extra cost. Medical emergency cover is separate as well & all of your party each need an EHIC card as well which is free from NHS.
I would’t bother with ferry failure particularly with Dover routes they run every hour. Campsite cancellation cover is normally with booking for small extra charge. Camping gear insurance can be arranged I think.
For most campers breakdown cover & medical cover is all they take out. To be safe you could add campsite cancellation cover onto booking & when you book ferry you will notice an extra charge will give you a refund if you have to cancel but nothing for delay usually.
I wasn't referring to car breakdown and recovery per se. I have a reliable (fingers crossed) car and suitable cover for this.
More related to being unable to complete the trip because the car broke down or was involved in an accident or the motorway was shut. I have previously been affected by operation stack on more than one occasion (luckily it was company/business based travel so I was not personally financially impacted)
I would therefore not meet my fixed tunnel booking, not be able to use my prepaid overnight stays, miss some of the booked nights at the arrival destination etc.
A package holiday with associated insurance would cover such eventualities assuming you choose the right provider.
I will endeavour to cover my own eventualities to my best abilities (i.e. faulty car/failure), but want to try and mitigate risk and/or loss due to the failure of other services/people beyond my reasonable control - that is what I understand travel insurance is supposed to do/offer.
I will continue to investigate and perhaps report back o my findings and solution !

Unfortunately for us it would be £295. We find it is cheaper through the bank
The Tunnel, and some ferries too, will change your crossing at no or little extra charge if you ring beforehand. Just make sure you have the phone number handy during your journey.
We were on our way to Amsterdam via North Sea Ferries when they had the flooding in Hull, and we couldn't get to the port. Rang them up and they were happy to change the crossing. Trouble is, at that point in time, how can anyone who works know when they will get another holiday? I just had the crossing 'dumped' for later in the year, then changed it again once I got time off.
We have annual cover through our bank - need to make sure it is on the joint account as otherwise it may not cover both adults.
We do breakdown as well and european car insurance. Insurance is either free or less than
£30 depending on your cover. You do need to let them know your dates though.
Breakdown we have used even though my car is (was) very reliable. Just remember that the breakdown people speak less English than I do french. " My car it works not "
