Hi all, new to the forum and just looking for a bit of advice. We're not complete newbies to camping, but we are looking to go a lot more and hopefully improve our set up! We have a Higear Mojave 5 tent and having just been able to get a hold of the matching porch (nearly impossible!!!!), I wondered what other essentials we would need to make it comfortable, and mostly fun, for us all. We have all the usual - gas stove, stand, blah blah blah. Was thinking more like carpets, storage units, the likes? Are these worth the money? I had thought of using extra large picnic rugs? Anyone have any advice?!?! Thanks in advance!

Picnic rugs are good for the tent, and much cheaper and more versatile than a purpose made tent carpet. And a door mat or two by the entrance.

Storage units are a waste of time in my opinion; better to just use a couple of plastic stacking crates for food, utensils etc, a coolbox for the food, and stick to squishy bags for clothing; easier to pack than hard suitcases. Keep it simple, in other words.

Thanks for the advice Richard! Really looking forward to getting out a lot more this year!! The girls are all at a good age now, so no excuses!! Will invest in some picnic rugs and leave the storage units on the shelf 👍 we have lots of rucksacks, I'd rather use one of them than a suitcase anyday!

If you have a porch area with exposed grass, the foam interlocking mats that Aldi are selling at the moment are great for when the weather takes a turn for the worst.

My two grandsons (5 & 7) enjoy having a playmat in the tent canopy; it doubles as a rug, is washable and provides distraction in idle or 'winding down' moments, with a handful of toy cars, animals etc.

Hi Mel, we have found that Ikea blue bags are ideal for camping, each of us has one for clothes, lots of room and no losing things in corners like ‘proper’ bags. That are also useful for storage in the porch, we use one for toys and one for shoes.
A toilet bucket is a godsend with young kids, we use bin bags with some cat litter to line and just use for night wees, much easier than trying to make it to the toilet block in the dark or rain.
Card games are popular, UNO, Pass the Pigs, Top Trumps etc and outdoor toys, a catch set and a nerf dart are good but small.
Last but not least a ready made meal like chilli that is easy to warm up on the first night and a cool bottle of wine goes a long way to making a good start to the holiday!

You can buy a portable toilet with seat and tight fitting lid for about £20 on Amazon. I never bothered with one when my children were younger though, and it is yet another bulky thing to squeeze into the car. I would try without first.

Toilet / potty: We just had a pitches fairly close to the toilet when ours were young and needed night wees - youngest now 6. Otherwise you need to empty it in the morning with the children around, clean it, wash hands, take it back to the tent. Then you can start with the things for the day like breakfast and morning wees! (JMHO)

A tent carpet - we have one firstly as it is warm, secondly to help our sewn in groundsheet last longer if one of our 'monkeys' pushes something sharp into the ground sheet eg. pencil.

We took some games from home - picture dominoes and bought some charity shop games (£1) to take for when it is a bit rainy to have family time. Nice to have hot chocolate (instant as camping) and biscuits too in the rain. Second hand games as if you loose any bits or it gets broken and needs to be binned I don't get upset.

Coloured pens are great - away from the tent and outside.

Childrens blowing bubbles ruin the waterproofness of the tent - you can still do this on holiday just at the beach, in a field....

We use fabric bags for each person for their underwear - packed at home. Wherever you put their clothes it is always hard to find knickers/pants and socks - so no excuse not to have clean ones - just wear the same top again if not stained!!! My children do, we take back lots of clean clothes.

Mine are now 6 & 8 but I found taking a potty for nighttime wees was a godsend: We have only just stopped taking one! Getting little ones up and out in the middle of the night is a right faff and inevitably as soon as the first one is back in bed the next one wakes up and off you go again . We kept the potty just outside the tent so it was easily accessible and then took it to the loo first thing to empty it/wash it out.   

I like having one of these. A shelf each for the kids' clothes (or just pants/socks if a longer stay) and a high surface for keys/phones/headphones etc.

Take about 3 x as many snacks as you think you'll need, very useful for when you're at the sharp end of pitching.

Don't try and get them in to bed too early...and whatever you do don't forget the marshmallows/sticks for round the campfire!

Mine like having their own little light for bedtime as they don't like pitch dark so we use these IKEA ones.

Thank you all for your replies! Some brilliant ideas re games/cards/pens etc! Will have a rake around the charity shops and see what I can pick up 😃👍 potty is a great idea, the littlest is still in a nappy at bedtime but the oldest would quite often get up through the night, so will definitely take a potty! Marshmallows and hot chocolate are second and third on the list after booze 😂😂 Can't wait to get out and have a fun filled family camping holiday! May this be the satrt of many more adventures 😊😊 x
