I am looking to go camping for the first time in ages with my daughter and finding the whole stove purchasing choices tricky. Can anyone recommend a good one that safe with kids ... do the grills actually work on fold away ones?

I was looking at the new Outwell rukutu - does any have one? Is it any good? I can only find one review that said Outwell things were rubbish and not to buy them.
Thanks so much

Hi,

I had the Outwell Jimbu which is a 3.5kw burner and a 1.8kw grill running off a portable EN417 canister. Looks like the same grill in the stove you're looking at though 1300W vs 1800w in the Jimbu.

Only tried the grill with bread, but it took around 5-6 minutes to make a cold slice of toast as you had to use a low heat and keep moving the bread constantly or it just burned it black through the holes in seconds.

Probably better with wet fatty foot like burgers, sausages etc. however there is no real way to clean the fat out, just a small removable drip tray and the whole unit weighed nearly 5kg so I don't want the whole tent stinking of fat constantly.

In my view, much better to go for simple gas twin burner and use a disposable barbecue for grilling / or fry in a frying pan. I got the Outwell Olida which works well off the small EN417 cylinders, Camping Wow do a good deal in refills which makes it reasonably cheap to run though most people prefer to take a large refillable cylinder of some sort so really is personal choice. I like the Olida as it has windshields and weighs less than 3kg.

I have read the Kampa Crust is good for toast but haven't tried it myself. You simply place it on a standard hob.

Other than the disposable barbecues which we used nearly every day, I also have a 800w teriyaki grill for electrical hookup which works fantastically well, bigger ones are available. Heats up quickly and sufficient size for a small family.

I tend to do eggs in frying pan as the top surface of the teriyaki grill is concave you either need a round shape to contain the egg or it runs down a the drain hole and blocks it.

Really only use the grill for morning bacon or when it's too wet to barbecue outside.

I guess in summary, I think the Outwell products are fine, except for the grills. I don't think you can get a decent portable gas grill (in a hob unit) so I'd rather do without.

Only other thing with the outwells, the dimension limit you to pans around 22-24 cm in diameter, you can have one of each or two at 23cm which makes for a small frying pan.

Cant say about the Outwell stove you mention. It does look good and the control knobs have a nice feel. I ended up buying a Vango Combi IR grill. The burners are good but the grill is hopeless and this seems true of all camp stoves.
If I were buying again I would ditch the grill in favour of the three ring stove that Vango do.

Hope thats of some help.
