Has anyone else noticed the correlation between regular ingestion of Marmite and cessation of mosquito bites?
I’m sadly (or rather was) a source of considerable interest to the dratted mozzies, I’d no sooner appear outside, than that irritating high pitched whine would commence as the proverbial dinner gong was struck, this caused no end of amusement to my wife-who naturally was immune to their predilection for fresh meat, particularly of the lower leg variety.

But! I’ve changed my diet somewhat and now consume a Marmite sandwich daily, to my intense joy 😁 I find that they’re no longer interested. In the interest of science, I’ve walked through water meadows & woodlands, a definite refuge for the blighters & nothing! Nada, not a bite, naturally I began to feel rather smug about this, lasting several days into our recent sojourn in Dorset. However, I can report to my chagrin that it doesn’t work for horseflies, whilst talking to a fellow camper, I became aware of an irritation, looked down and spotted a voracious horsefly sucking my blood with reckless abandon, it was with considerable satisfaction that I knocked it off and stood on it. A small victory, but a victory nonetheless!

I’m not sure this would deter Scottish midges (imagine only a full B/W suit would achieve that) but would be interested in your views....

Other brands are of course available!

I did read something ages ago about taking Brewer's Yeast tablets deterring mozzies... as Marmite's yeast extract I suppose there could be some correlation there.
I think midgies home in on the CO2 in exhaled breath, so are rather harder to put off! (I may be wrong on that, can't recall where I read it).
Horseflies... yuk.

I love Marmite, but smearing it on the skin to deter bugs seems a step too far...

I'm joking. Interesting though. Would love to have tested that out during our recent non-camping visit to North Wales and Snowdonia. We couldn't sit out after about 7.00pm due to the midges, and they were out in force climbing Snowdon (in the rather unexpected hot sunshine). A womman I spoke to was complaining about thee men as they had shoals (collective noun for midges, an irritation?) at their campsite too (at that point I was almost glad to be in a large cottage - 8 of us - rather than a tent). Other than that, the scenery and weather were just glorious.

My son eats Marmite at least twice a day and he is never bothered by bitey things. Might also be that when we camp he avoids washing as much as possible and becomes indistinguishable from the surrounding soil/grass. He’s invisible to beasties

You don't know what you're missing not covering yourself with Marmite and as for midges and I quote "Climbing Snowdon" Surely they fly of are they some kind of welsh mutation?

One of the things I learned as a kid was if it tasted nasty it was good for you. From Asprin to Marmite to Brussels Sprouts...all good for you.

I cant believe someone could say such a thing … comparing such a gorgeous taste as Brussel Sprouts as the disgusting taste of Marmite

I think you got that the wrong way round, after all Marmite is the food of the gods and Brussel sprouts the work of the devil.

Yes. I have. Marmite is full of B vitamins (as is brewers yeast) and this is what seems to deter the little darlings.

It has been discussed elsewhere on tinterweb so you're not the only one to notice a difference ....
