Only experienced it a couple of times, the worst one was when they tried to hide the water tap from other campers, we had one the other side of the hedge to us, but because it was on mud, and people used to let the tap run it got boggy, but 25 yrds away between 2 caravans was another tap. I asked reception if it was for their own use and it wasn't it was for anyone to use.
I went to use it and got the evil eye treatment, so from then on I told anyone that used the tap the other side of the hedge to us, to use the other one as it was on concrete and not slippery mud. They were not happy

I actually had that said to me on a touring site; my response was that strange, it's usually people with poor manners who lower the tone - unfortunately that went over the man's head!! Ignore them - most people are fine!
I think FJ has hit the nail on the head. Anyone who's shallow enough to feel tent prejudice and rude enough to voice it is a bit of a lost cause, best ignored!
I think you've just been unlucky and encountered an obnoxious individual. We were in a caravan earlier this year, now back to a tent. Last year, we had a trailer tent. Love 'em all! Variety is the spice of camping.
