I was just on the phone to my wife talking about what tent my 11 year old is going to take on her Guides camp this weekend. There's only two girls in the tent and the Guides have given them a huge tent - we've got a 5 man dome tent that would be perfect).
My wife & I were talking through the options and I hear my daughter object in the background “But the Tornado is a POLYESTER tent – it’ll get too hot inside!!”
I love that I’ve raised a little tent geek.
(She's not getting one of the canvas tents, though!)
You raised her well... She needs to stay in the canvas ridge tents we had at guides - no groundsheet - you made a 'bedding roll' and that was that and all the squarelashing to make a washing up stand ... none of these new-fangled SIG things - polyester or canvas. And cooking over a real fire - I hope she has fun.
I've given her full instructions on how to put it up, with a little diagram - she's determined to get it done by herself with her friend holding the pins in while she bends the poles. I'm fascinated to hear how she gets on!
Apparently there will be camp fires, but there will also be my old trusty and beloved backpacking thermarests for her and her friend (eeek!)

Wow, that brought back some memories! I was in the Scouts as a boy, many decades ago, and that is exactly as I remember our camping. Ridge tents and bedding rolls that were inspected regularly! I can also remember having to dig latrines! I bet they have chemical toilets these days.
I think they have a toilet block at the site they're at, but she's well used to no-toilets as well - we've just got back from a site with no facilities apart from a tap and a rough and ready shed with a bench with a hole over a wheelie bin - the farmer comes around every now and again and drags it off to be composted!
Toilet block?? Such luxury! Even a ramshackle shed would have been a vast improvement on our "facilities", especially if someone else did the disposing. All we ever got was a big hole in the ground, which we had to dig, and a tent over it. Maybe if we were lucky we may have got a plank with a hole in to put over it. (Still remember those splinters!) How times change, eh?
We still had a great time though, and I hope your daughter does too!
They still make those bedding rolls. My daughter has to make them on the last week at Guides and then will be ready for 10 days later when they go to camp.
I believe that they have polyester tents. However hers will not have storage, carpet, table & chairs and a Mum & Dad to tidy up (& moan at her). Think it is 5 of them.
Ah yes, the 'lats'. Lovely. I am talking 40+ years ago. But, hopefully the fun to be had with friends, and the fresh air won't have changed. It sounds like she has it sorted.
