Hello everyone
I’m returning to camping this year after several years away. My kids are older, needs have changed, so the sort of campsite I’m looking for has altered. I’m planning on using ehu for the first time!
My question is about tarps and awnings. Lots of the campsites I considered for our summer holiday said ‘no awnings’ and many that didn’t charged extra. So...forgive my ignorance....as far as tents go, what is the difference between a tarp and an awning? Will campsites with a ‘ no awning’ rule allow tarps?
If tarps are allowed I’d better start practising.
I don't recall seeing any sites that say 'no awnings' so I am puzzled. What is an awning for a tent?
Tents can have extensions which when fitted become part of the tent and can't be described as an awning but could increase the size of a tent beyond what the campsite allows.
Tarps are tarps and I wouldn't call those awnings either. It is usually caravans and motorhomes that have awnings so perhaps some campsites don't allow those.
However, many campsites have banned gazebos, which may be referred to as awnings, because they can get blown away in the wind and cause chaos and damage to other units.
If campsites state 'no awnings' then it may be wise to phone them and ask them what they mean by awnings.
So maybe the awning restrictions were talking about caravans, and I got confused! Tarps are not an issue on most campsites then, if you are within your pitch?
Lots of rules and regs seem different since I last camped, don’t want to get it too badly wrong and get told off by a passing warden.
I think it refers to caravan awnings. When booking our tent-plus-awning combo I book it in as a large tent (no awning), giving the pitched dimensions of the outfit.
For clarity, tent "extensions" are open at the front and have no groundsheet. Tent "awnings" are fully enclosed, usually with a toggle in groundsheet.

I have never heard of any problems with tarps or 'awnings' for that matter. I have heard of the odd campsite banning windbreaks, as well as gazebos (or charging extra for them) so as I say, if there is something in the rules which isn't clear it is best to phone them and ask because campsites are all a law unto themselves and have a myriad of weird and wonderful rules.

Now, I'd have thought the fully-enclosed with groundsheet would be classed as an extension and an open-fronted with no groundsheet called a porch or canopy!
Just goes to show, there's no definitive answer. I too think the 'no awning' rule applies to caravans and motorhomes.
