Hi all,
I have bought the Argos Pro action 4 man dome tent for quick weekends away. I have just realised it is only 1200 HH. If it pours down could I throw a rubberised paddling pool cover over the tent or would this just make things worse? A novel idea I know but the pool cover is all I have available.
Thank you.
Hh is a test of how much water pressure the fabric can take *hydraulic head * tbh it's unlikely it'll leak and the condensation you'd get inside putting plastic over the tent would be awful. More likely is its a cheap tent and the seams leaking could happen and of course solar degredat ion will make the risk of the cheap fabric failing in the wind greater. That is - others may disagree - but the tent is more likely to fail in other ways than leak through in some rain.
Legally, it is classed as waterproof if it has an HH of 1000. Years ago, 1200 was the norm.

That is interesting. When I first started camping regularly back in 2002 I am sure the British Standard for a tent to be called waterproof was 1500mm. I have just done a bit of research and it seems to vary according to which website you look at...one site I looked at even said 800mm is the minimum. I guess our friends in the EU have been interfering again.
Even a cheap tent will be waterproof unless its exceptionally heavy rain and even then you are unlikely to get soaked. Our first family tent was a cheap Argos job and it served us well for the first couple of years. The ridge tent we had back in the early 90s was a different story!
Its a myth that you have to spend £200 on a tent to keep you dry, especially for summer camping in the UK. Make sure its pitched properly and ventilate to prevent condensation and you will be fine.
My Saunders was probably less than 1500 HH and I never got soaked in it. That was a tent I used it in the mountains in winter. Many modern silnylon backpacking tents are under 2000HH and they are used in worse conditions than family tents. As long as the seams are sealed and the tent is taut it will repel water. Putting a tarp or plastic over it is just asking for condensation problems.
