I'm looking for some advice/ideas on having an area to cook in when the weather isn't great. I currently have a vango lomond 500 and unfortunately I can't seem to find a canopy suitable ie universal. I'm now looking at the tarp route but have no idea. Ideally I'm looking for something to be placed at the side door of the tent and having it create a dry area. Any ideas would be gratefully received. Thanks

Does your Lomond look like this?

I'd be inclined to sling a tarp over the front like in this picture by Mucker:

but with fewer guys probably.

I had a stab at a side-on tarp which worked quite well for sitting / poking a barbecue, but was too low for normal cooking. It needed four poles, too.

And clingons once it looked like raining:

I'd suggest a 4 x 4 metre tarp and 4 poles, and you'll most likely need a windbreak too. And patience. It might be easier to get a utility tent.

A tarp "for when the weather isn't great" screams wind and rain to me.
The more guys the merrier, I say!

Not only do you need to protect against it blowing away (or getting ripped), any slack, and it doesn't take long for the tarp to collect a puddle... which will only get bigger/deeper, if not attended to, and will almost certainly lead to a collapse!

Some of those guys are purely to form run-off's, to avoid any rain settling on the tarp.

Wise words Mucker.

Another option and quite easy to do is like this over the front:

That's a 3 x 3 metre tarp from Decathlon which came complete with poles.

Thanks for the advice and suggestions. I've come across a Vango Hogan hub shelter (sorry can't figure out how to include pics)
The hub comes with sides included unlike others. Does anyone have any experience with these hubs? Given the size of 3.5m x 3.5m I would expect some campsites to add an additional charge if I was to go this route. With the optional configuration of the side panels I think this would be a option for wet weather cooking/eating. Sorry yes that is my tent above.

You would be paying more and basically it is two tents. There are some manufacturers that do curved front extensions for tunnel tents

Obelink and 10T are two that come to mind.

Like Ewen's post above, see also the review section on this site for 10T polycotton tarp available from Camping Outdoors/Spreen on line/.

I use one on a variety of tents and as a tarp tent on it's own. Available in 2 sizes...

After much thought we've opted for the vango Hogan hub. We Think it would suit us better got a decent price of £130 for the large 2018 version which comes with all sides and a clip on ground sheet which i dont think id use much but is an option.I think with the option of removing any side panel for cooking/eating under or remove all sides in the summer months it will be used a fair bit. Going on a 2 night trip in next few weeks to mains farm near Penrith so will experiment with location of the hub. Possibly looking at using at the side entrance of the lomond tent.

We have the Lomond 500 (poled not air), we have a Lomond 500 Air Porch Door for the front which just works (the air version is 5cm lower) it’s on sale at Winfields. It gives a good enclosed porch area that can be opened up for cooking, good for an entrance in the wet. Here
I have a vango tunnel tarp which works great on the side door of a Skye 400 but haven’t tried it on the Lomond side door yet. Not sure it will go over the higher tunnel.
I wanted a Vango Family Shelter to provide an extended covered area out front but no one has them in stock.https://www.winfieldsoutdoors.co.uk/vango-lomond-500-air-porch-door/https://www.winfieldsoutdoors.co.uk/vango-lomond-500-air-porch-door/

Why not use a universal side porch on the side door?

Having returned yesterday from a 3 night camping trip at mains farm, kirkoswald near Penrith I would like to share my experience with the Vango Hogan Hub.
We pitched our tent (Lomond 500 pictured under first post) and then set out to pitch the Hub. Once up and weighing up our options I discovered that once fully opening one of the panels on the Hub that it would sit just over the front arch of the tent and inbetween the first arch and second pole of the tent. This allowed the Hub to connect to the tent without any gaps. This worked perfectly. With one end over the tent and the adjacent panel of the hub open this created a great living space under the Hub. Plenty of room for a table, an inflatable chair and sofa and cooking equipment. Of an evening we zipped up the front panel which allowed some privacy. All in all very happy with the Hub. I would include some photos but I can't figure out how to add them to the post.
