the other way of looking at it would be on arrival your car will be all nice and warm, and if you don't go leaving the doors open and leave your sleeping bag in the car by the heating it will be nice for getting into bed with

Go for it, it extends the camping season. I tend to do more in low than peak season, since my son no longer camps with me.
Your scenario happened to me, I went Camping on a whim last minute idea, arrived at dusk, ended up pitching in the dark, with just the headlights on. Clear sky that night, I was able to see the stars in all their glory. Plus I checked the weather for cast, no rain, happy days. Like you, I live on the Wirral, it was a drive over the border into North Wales.

Much better idea, don't want car headlights all over campsite, and engines running.......
Also you'll be working in shadow. Not so with a headtorch.
