We've recently bought a second hand Vango odyssey 500 airbeam tent for long weekends away, It's been in the garden for a few days so we can try various bits and bobs out and see how we get on with it.
The OH purchased two single hi gear folding camp beds for us, good in theory as you can store clothes underneath, but didn't realise how big they were, so it doesn't leave much room for the kids! Anyway, first night I put a blanket on the bed and my sleeping bag on top. I started off super comfy but kept waking up with awful pain in my ribs and hips and by morning I felt like I had been run over.
Last night I put an old SIM on the campbed first - a Vango starlight and then a thick duvet over that. Thought I had cracked it until again, I had the same problem. Not as bad but still, my whole body hurts this morning.
I'm a bit of a reluctant camper, I feel the cold & find everything is just a bit more difficult in a tent (especially catering for two meat eaters a vegan and a fussy vegetarian!!) but if I can sleep well I'm ok for a few days and love being outdoors.
I have a new Vango nitestar four season bag and was so warm all night so that problem is solved but I need a different bed.
We've had a Coleman airbed before, which I've found really cold (although never used with a four season bag) annoying when the OH turns over as you bounce and no matter how much you spend they always seem to deflate! A lot of them are quite rigid as well and I need something with a bit of give.
I've looked at some of the new 10cm SIM'S such as the Outwell dreamboat etc but they look really rigid and are expensive. I had thought of putting one straight on the floor and putting a memory foam topper on top of them and doing away with the campbeds.
Anyone have any suggestions?? I want to avoid packing so much stuff that it takes hours to set up and spending a fortune. There is four of us and the bedroom isn't big so there is room for two camp beds and the kids sleep on the floor with their feet under the beds or do away with the campbeds and have some sort of mattresses on the floor.
I have spina bifida occulta. I have two ways of ensuring a decent sleep without back pain.
In a tent with little room as in my backpacking tents, I use insulated airmats which stop the cold from the ground but can be adjusted for firmness as you lie on them. The most expensive are by exped and thermarest. I used to have half size vaude but now use a full size paria recharge xl
This combo is better than my bed at home and I don't get a sore (or more sore than usual) back.

If you are going for a SIM, get a 10 cm or a 15.
Gary Cross of Cross camping has you tube videos of the self inflating mats. Very helpful fella, posts on here too.

I have multiple problems with my joints and I use the single use heat pads on my hips. I’m not nearly so sore in the morning. I find “Cura-heat” ones the best, from Home Bargains. They are normally on the shelf alongside deep heat and other similar products. I use as well as a SIM and mattress topper. The heat lasts all night and part of the following day.
