Like Spiritbirner, I have had mine down to -10 and it is rated to -7 max using with down jacket. A good mat and a down jacket keeps me snug. It is a question of balancing the weight and the warmth. I would be carrying the down jacket anyway.
Last year I used the same sleeping bag in a heatwave in France last year as a quilt too.

Dear All,

Thank you all so much for giving me so many really interesting directions to look in and some great ideas. I did not know about many of the manufacturers mentioned, neither did I know that it was possible to use quilts. Also I hadn’t considered the whole layering approach to sleeping bag use I.e, sleeping in my down jacket. All amazingly helpful. I am now considering what is best for me and thinking very carefully about weight and how best to minimise this while ensuring I remain warm as I tend to run cold especially in my extremities.

Still think Alpkit be the best. One thing i would watch out for is if you go with the bag and down jacket combo is the weather. Don't want to be getting in a bag with a damp jacket. Also with you sleeping cold now is the best time to buy Merino wool base layers as winter over. And last but not least have you tried the following before getting in your bag. A bag is there to retain heat. If you do 5 minutes of exercise before getting in you have raised your body temp.

That is what a shell jacket is for. If you are getting down stuff wet then best to go synthetic or get hydrophobic down.
Totally correct regarding exercise. A well sealed nalgene bottle full of hot water will also heat up the bag...or a pee bottle. Well sealed of course.
If you don't mind bulk the British army softie jacket and trousers are a good buy. Designed for bivvying. Just watch the sizing.
