Hi all - what a great weekend weather we have had, done our very 1st trip with the tent on a non electric pitch in the peak district. Loved it - great scenery - and learnt a lot about what we want from our trips, type of site - the quieter the better, the site surrounds and facilities. What i would like to ask opinions on is beds... we took inflatable beds with us and to be honest they were hard to blow up with a manual pump and not the most comfertable. Which brand/type is everyone elses favourite for a good nights sleep for a couple of geriatric campers:) that is also easy to fold up. Many thanks everyone
Beds are very much a matter of personal preference.
Lots of people do prefer blow up beds, many people move from blow up beds to SIMS , self inflating mats. These are warmer than blow ups because the layer of foam is good insulation.
For added height some people like a SIM on a camp bed, or on an inflatable camp bed from Decathlon. (It has an inflatable frame bed base with slats).
We use the Coleman sissor leg type of beds that fold up into a neat carry case. These are similar to the ones used by the armed forces when setting up base camps.
For extra comfort you can add a SIM on top of this to make a really comfy bed. They are easier to get up off than a floor mattress, and theres plenty of room underneath for storage.
We actually went a step further and purchased some foam block from Dunhelm to make a foldable 4inch mattress for each single, but you do need the space of a trailer or van to transport them in. We still have them for use in our awning, or as guest bed at home for when the Grandchildren come to stay.

We bought two of the decathlon bed bases a few weks ago (after the OH ruptured a disc in his back). These, combined with a 12cm Outwell Dreamcatcher SIM gave us probably the best nights sleep Ive ever had camping. Yes they werent cheap, but Ive always said the bed is the one thing you shouldn’t skimp on when camping.

Hi just checked their site - do you mean the inflatable bed base please?
That is the one Madamzsazsa and I are on about. Same as the picture I posted. I have spina bifida occulta. The decathlon air 70 bed bases give me the best sleep ever combine with an air mat.

Hi, depends on how much room you have for carrying items and/or tent size.
What we have done now for a good number of years is get three of the self inflating mats (ours are 55cm wide), fasten some velcro underneath to keep the mats tight against one another. Lay on top of that a double bed size duvet. Preferably a cheap 13.5 tog one - they tend to be quite thick and firm. Use that as your "mattress" and use another large duvet over the top of whatever tog rating you need to keep warm.
We find this is really comfy, warm and doesn't have the movement restrictions a normal sleeping bag would have.
Can absolutely recommend it!
