Hi there

Brand new to this site so hope I’ve given enough info for some help?

I have a 12v 42w fan assisted fridge, 100w solar panel, a 110ah leisure battery and a Sunix solar controller..

Im hoping to get through 4/5 days of camping without EHU.. Will this set up work? I know there are loads of variables but the basic maths seems to add up..

Can anyone advise if all this kit will work together?

Have I missed anything?

Many thanks
Clare

This is the projected output of a 245kWh peak solar farm for a typical amount of sunshine. Some years may be better and others may be worse.

I estimate your 100 watt panel will produce 394 watt hours in 24 hours in July.

Your fridge if continuous will use 42w x 24hrs = 1008 watt hours per day.

I'm not sure if the fan runs all the time 24 hours a day or cuts in and out or you could switch it off at night.

Your fully charged battery will give around 1000 watt hours.

I reckon it might be a bit short and this is July which is a good month. However, if the fan doesn't run 24/7 it may be OK.

Month     % of yearly production (PV GIS)     Production per month (kWh)
January      2.79%      6,446
February 4.43%     10,235
March      8.28%     19,130
April      10.93%     25,252
May      13.15%     30,381
June      13.25%     30,612
July      12.96%     29,942
August      12.09%     27,932
September 9.72%     22,457
October      6.52%     15,063
November 3.81%     8,802
December 2.07%     4,782
Total     100.00%     231,034

By fan assisted I guess you mean a Thermoelectric cool box, or maybe I have got that wrong.

If not I would look at changing to a portable compressor fridge, we have a little Waeco CF25, and I recon that would run of a leisure battery for around a couple of days or more depending on the ambient temp.

In fact I have run the Waeco in the car continuously for over a month without draining the battery, as such type portable fridges have battery protection.

Another solution albeit expensive is the Goal Zero Yeti 3000 which is a portable solar generator, it has inbuilt BMS, so you can plug a solar panel directly into the Yeti.

We use a table top fridge. Not much bigger than a coolbox. We got ours from eBay second hand about 40 quid...Plenty on there brand new for less than a hundred quid.

Aquamouse, does your table top fridge work on 12 volt? If so,please could you tell me the make and model so that I can look out for one.
Thanks.

Is a lifecyle of 500 charges good for a £3K+ unit?

About 5 years ago wee did a few shows in summer with our stall, I had a 100w panel and electric cool box to keep the beer chilled and for the three days it just about hung on.. kept a close eye on it and followed the sun round turned it off at night

I’ve got a Yeti 150 for phone charging etc! Lovely piece of kit but the 3000 is not feasible price wise..

But if money was no object I’d of defo splashed out on one of these! 👍🏼

Thanks

If you add a 12V thermostat to the install you can use it to get better control of the fridge. This will stop it from over cooling and should therefore consume less overall power.

Something like this would do it.

Thermoelectric coolboxes are almost useless, a triumph of marketing over practicality.

A Yeti 3000 is a very expensive way to store power compared to a bank of admittedly heavier 12V lead acid batteries.

If you must be off grid, either buy a proper 12V high quality (good insulation) fridge at £400 and use with 100 - 200W of solar or buy a super insulated cool box ~ £120 and add a bag of ice cubes every couple of days. If are on site where they have a freezer you can use some 500ml bottles filled with water as ice packs though you need a box big enough for the packs and the food.

Thermo electric = fail

Dunno. We now have that 12v fridge, solar, leisure battery set up & a 3-way fridge prior to that but use a thermoelectric coolbox for the journey in the cab to keep drinks, salads, sandwiches etc cool. Does the job nicely.
