Looking at camping at a European gp next year. Did it this year and rented a tent but looking at cutting costs. Any advice on what I need and how to get it on a budget there’s two of us but was looking at 4 person tents for space. TIA
Buying a showerproof tent means getting wet when it rains. Spend a little extra and buy a better tent.
If you don't own sleeping bags you may as well take the duvet from home, but you'll need some kind of sleeping mats or air beds.
Everybody has a torch somewhere.
Have a practice camp in your garden or near home. anything that you go back into the house for you'll need to take camping with you or get a camping version of.
If you can go out for tea, coffee and hot food you won't need a stove or pots and pans.
Thanks we already have sleeping bags from
Last year. We’ll be in the middle of nowhere so stove kettle cups and plates are needed. When we stayed last year the tent was a freedom trail and apart from bieng a bit cold in the wind it was actually ok in the rain. Was going to get a different freedom trail tent for ourselves but see they’re not popular on here.
If you are planning to go to France get a stove that uses Campingaz, as you can get fuel in supermarkets. A small hiking stove using disposable cans would probably suit you. Personally I dislike the "suitcase" stoves that run on aerosol cans.
Use stuff you already have from home where you can. Only buy what you really need, the big French supermarkets will stock anything you have overlooked. Go camping shopping when you get home for next time.
Everyone will have their personal preferences of design, material, cost, all dependant of their usage.
If FT does it for, you your usage and budget, then that's fine. Over the years your usage, needs, budgets may change, but by then you will have a idea based on more experience.
A FT tent that you are familiar with seems a reasonable enough start point? There will probably be various reviews of them on site.....
(If you want a 4 person tent, perhaps? look at 6 person tents?????)
Yup loads of FT reviews:

this year I bought a Eurohike Rydal 600 for myself & three kids when we do weekenders. It’s dead easy to put up with only three poles but loads of space. There’s also a more common Rydal 500 that would be plenty big enough for you both. Eurohike is Millets/Blacks own brand. They’re sound as a weekender in my opinion and at the moment they’re selling for a great price.
In terms of food, we did the Spa GP two years ago & there weren’t many supermarkets around, and the ones we came across were mega-expensive. I would do a meal plan & take as much as you can from home.
In terms of equipment you don’t need that much. A good brand suitcase stove is fine. We have a hubcap style attachment for ours which also doubles as a bbq, it worked really well!
Best of luck with whatever you choose.
Which 4 man Freedom Trail tent ?
Looking at photos I suspect you are not looking at the Toco Family tent as it has 2 bedrooms.
I don't like the Sorendo, it looks too big for it's poles and might suffer in high winds. Same with the Colville really.
A look around Ebay for a 4 man tent less then £100 found this: qhttps://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Coleman-Darwin-Plus-4-Man-Dome-Tent-Green-Grey/254277400806?epid=11034357071&hash=item3b341d38e6:g:PWMAAOSwZrBdFFSSuick
A bit more stable than this: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Freedom-Trail-Sendero-4-Man-Berth-Tent-Festival-RRP-180-952/254385201579?hash=item3b3a8a21ab:g:RMwAAOSwyDFdn0rK
I agree about looking at Ebay. Especially at this time of the year when there will be tents etc up for sale from people who have bought all the gear only to find out they hate camping.
There are bargains to be had at this time of the year if you do your homework you could get a quality tent thats been used once for a lot less than what it cost new.
------------- It is a wise man who has something to say.
It is a fool who has to say something.
The Eurohike Rydal is currently £140 with the Autumn Code offer from Millets.
Or other tents if you are not bothered about standing height? IME after a day or two it is very wearing not being able to stand up in your tent.
A tent with a fully sewn in groundsheet will be less drafty and keep bugs out.
The Vango Blaze on ring burner stove is £17 on Millets, these use the self sealing screw in cartridges, safer and hotter burning than ‘suitcase’ stoves and more lightweight. I have the Outwell Appetizer equivalent: very pleased with it. A windshield is a good addition.
Get a cheap folding chair each (often available as a deal for two), a couple of lanterns, use a supermarket 5l water flagon for your water, you might want a small table?
