A tarp can be used as a free standing ridge dining shelter or as extension to a tent with the poles at the further edge.
Put up your tent, place one edge of the tarp over the top of the tent then peg it down, then erect and peg down the poles at the far end of the tarp. The tent door should be under the tarp, making the tarp a tent flysheet extension.
if this doesn't work for you erect the tarp as a separate dining/cooking shelter but the campsite may charge you for a 2nd tent.
Experiment.
------------- Enjoy the liveliness of the syntax.

After wrestling with tarps for a few years I got a Decathlon fishing umbrella. They sell a spike you can hammer into the ground. Side walls for it are sold separately and means you can peg it down, We can get two chairs and a stove under it. Again drop it at night and when out but a lot easier than a tarp.
