Hi I'm new here and new to camping. I'm lucky enough to be able to rent a tent pitch with my g/f at a local club. Members tend to pitch their tents about this time of year (normally) and take them down in sept/oct. We have been advised to buy stable matting, ideally second hand to keep mice and moles chewing through the flooring. This is proving to be potentially very expensive. I'm looking for advice from long term campers for a viable alternative. Thanks for any help.

Hi Nature Boy, renting a pitch for the season sounds spot on, where abouts is the camp site and is it a club or open to all, what kind of tent are you pitching as imagine it has to be able to withstand the elements, not sure about flooring, I have a plastic woven grass friendly floor for my tent but imagine the nice would have a field day on it

Hi Stubber, it's a private membership club as spaces are limited and it's open all year. I think mice would have a field day with plastic ! The tent is a 6 berth tunnel tent.

The cheapest floor covering I have found for a tent is a caravan awning carpet. However, I am surprised you are able to go camping as we are all supposed to be in lock down at home aren't we?

You are right but I'm hoping to later this year as it's a private club and social distancing is easy. I want to be up and running when things do ease. We wouldn't be living there 24/7 as we live 10 miles away. The tent would be up permanently until October . Not too concerned about cost just want to pay reasonable amount. Thick rubber carpet on one web site would cost twice the cost of the tent. Even considered wire mesh. Seems our situation is unusual as most campers pitch for one or two weeks.

Bear in mind a long term pitch will mean your tent will degrade more quickly than casual limited use...I've visited camping retailers with tents permanently on display from Spring to Autumn and some of the tents degrade to the texture of tissue paper.

Getting old isn't Fun but the alternative is much worse.

Yes, the sun degrades the tent material. That can be mitigated by a tarpaulin over the top.
