....camping this weekend? We’re booked 2 nights in the Lakes with a wet and windy forecast and are seriously considering whether we actually go, given that it might be our only opportunity to camp this summer 😢

Have been camping for 20 years and the thought of a summer without a camping trip saddens me, but also the stress of pitching in high winds to spend a wet weekend with 2 kids doesn’t fill me with joy either....

Tent is large steel framed Vango Keswick, bit of a beast to pitch at the best of times (yes, yes, we’ve been meaning to get a “weekend” tent but just never quite got round to it). So...what would you do? Stay home, or go regardless??

All depends on specifically where you are camping. Difficult to predict actual weather in the Lake District, one valley can be foul, but the next relatively fine as they radiate like spokes of a wheel, mountains channelling it up one valley but providing shelter in others! Common joke in the Lakes, don't like the weather, move to the next valley for something different!

I'd take a look at where you are camping and it's relationship to the direction the weather is forecast to come from (now there's an act of faith - believing a weather forecast!), if you are in the full force of it, maybe sacrifice the w/e rather than suffer, if you look like you may be sheltered, perhaps take a chance.

Spent a fortnight in Coniston (in the caravan) last year and it was perpetually foul, with rain barely stopping and cloud base about 100ft, but drove out to other areas and it was glorious.

Must admit though, a caravan brings with it an air of bravado with regard to weather, but a tent (but I do still tent camp, and survived Storm Miguel in France last year!) makes you think hard!

I'd say take a lot more heed of the specific Lake District weather forecast than the general forecast, the Lakes truly have their own micro-climate! 45 Years of visiting the region and walking the hills has taught me a lot about the area!

the wind forecast isnt too bad, 20 mph with 40 gusts, so aslong as you get it well pegged down your tent should fir better than the weekend tents do. the only other thing would be have you got anywhere to get it dried at home? if so then i would still go. however be warned the lakes are total madness at the moment not just towns but sites too, far to many newbies who havent go a clue and have took to tents as a "cheap" holiday, one site in borrowdale has shut due to them disrepecting the area

We are booked at Gill Head Farm, at Troutbeck - first time there so not familiar with the layout but from the photos I’ve found the tent field looks like it may be pretty open and exposed to the west, facing towards Blencathra. Winds currently forecast to be westerly/southwesterly. Am watching the weather like a hawk - thanks for the link to that site!

20mph winds are about my limit when camping - I’d take rain over wind any day! The worst forecast I’ve seen for Friday is 37mph winds gusting to over 50mph! Drying is a pain but not impossible - we have a garage, or could dry in the garden if we get a dry couple of days next week. I just don’t know if I’m up for the hassle of the whole thing for potentially little benefit....

That’s really sad about the demise of the towns/sites in the Lakes. I’m all for encouraging people to try camping, and we all started out somewhere, but when people don’t have respect for the sites or region I wish they’d stay at home! On the other hand I’m predicting that selling sites will soon be flooded with cheap camping gear “used once”.....

I wouldn't fancy those winds myself, but my tent is quite lightweight. I suppose if you go with the mindset that you're going on an adventure, not just for a relaxing change of scene, and your children aren't of an age to be scared witless by rough weather, then whatever happens you'll have something to talk about afterwards!

the worst of the winds are going to be friday lunchtime, so far thee forecast is now saying 29mph at lunchtime dropping to 13mph by tea time, personally i would still be packing ready to go, the weather forecast is notorius for not being able to predict anything on a different day!

Can you keep monitoring the forecast and leave it til the day before?

I still have tents festooned all over my house from last weekend. Dry, but too wet in the garden to fold and bag them.

Don't wish to spoil you camping outing .
Don't go .
Leave it for another time when it's dryer and sunnier .
The ground will already be very wet , possibly saturated
And weather forecast very bad strong winds heavy rain .
And the Lake district seems to attract all the worst conditions
