Hi just registered. Not exactly new to camping - most of our holidays as a kid were in tents. But as a family man and with a 7 year old and a 2 year old we'll be embarking on new camping adventures. Safely managed to fit camping gear into my estate car before the 2nd child was born but now looking at buying a trailer...

Welcome to the forum Nickf1975, we got back into camping in 2008, following many years of renting statics in the South of France, now we just take the tent.

As for trailer choice, just buy the largest that you can afford and accommodate.

If you are just towing within the U.K. then just about any trailer is better than none.

If you intend to go to France etc get something that can cope with being towed at 81mph.

My minimum requirement’s for a camping trailer are 13” Wheels, “A” Frame design, Jockey Wheel and lockable ABS lid.

I always give Red Cap Garage at Blackburn a mention when trailers are the subject, they are the U.K. importer for Lider trailers and cut a good deal, worth travelling to if you are a distance away.

Thanks for your advice. I've seen a Daxara on Gumtree and going to have a look. My understanding is 2nd hand are a bit hit and miss and not really sure what to look for apart from rust, bearing issues, tyre condition and electronics. I've had a towbar a while but never towed. I've got a decent sized diesel estate so a 4x3 should be fine I would have thought. Another issue is I think the garage wired up the towbar incorrectly and I didn't have an opportunity to check until recently when I got an old bike carrier board.. the right indicator doesn't seem to work...

In my opinion 4x3 is too small for camping equipment. I suggest that you measure an of 4x3 on the living room floor and then see how much you can place within the area. Do the same with 5x4 and then 6x4.You may surprised at difference each increase in length makes.
The other issue is that the shorter the trailer is, the more difficult it is to control when having to reverse.

hi Nickf1975 take the larger option with a trailer and give yourself more room in car especially if your considering a long journey you don't want the car lumbered up just have the essentials in the boot like tea or coffee making equipment and perhaps cool bag with drinks for the little ones and maybe some sandwiches i had an Erde 5'x4' which I towed down to Spain for 3 weeks and still had to put stuff in back of car

Thanks for the advice. Went with a small trailer in the end which suited my budget. Daxara 126 - despite my worries was really easy to tow but because it's so small I can't see it when towing. I was going to rig up some PVC pipe as a visibility pole any ideas which side/end to put it? TIA

Hi i rigged up a cheap reversing camera so as to see trailer and load stuck camera on in best position with command sticky pad so i could see trailer and keep an eye on the load if it came above top of trailer

Get the largest trailer that you can afford. Very soon afterwards you will find that it is not quite big enough.

Take the tip of marking out an area the size of the trailer, put your equipment on it, stand back and then discard 50% of it.
