No such thing as a silly question, if you don't know something ask someone.
Got no idea what your tent is as no clues at all, nor for the tarp for that matter.
Generally any movement between two surfaces (there WILL be movement due to wind) will cause a degree of chaffing, but whether that is significant and damaging depends heavily on the materials of both parts AND cleanliness - any grit or abrasive dirt will exacerbate the problem. Ropes/cords and edges concentrate the wear on a very small area, so try to avoid any hard contact with those or rapid wear can occur.
The other concern is robustness of anchor points, a tarp has a relatively large 'sail area' and can put a lot of strain on anchor points, make sure they are designed for taking strain, like guy line anchor points not some trivial trim piece which may rip out.
As an aside, 'builders tarps' make a lot of noise in winds with flapping and 'crackling', probably keep you and the neighbours awake in the quiet of the night, proper camping tarps made from similar material to tents are much quieter.
..... and I still haven't really answered your question! Lots of people successfully use tarps without issue, just be careful of how it's fitted.
