The late night altercation next to us in June was thankfully short lived (perhaps the logic of “you need to learn not to ******** talk to people like that you ***** ***** **** “ dawned on him, who knows. But it was conducted within the group that gaily pitched their tents across a corner of the field, trapping their cars behind their wall of tents with no way out.

Speaking from experience I've found generally that if you get a bunch of "hippy stoners" turn up they are quiet and friendly, and if you get younger people turn up - especially younger couples - they are also really nice and say a nervous "hello" as they unload their turbo-nutted out Peugeot hatchbacks and struggle with stacked trainers on a bumpy field.

Its a generalisation but if it's a new audi with a new roof box with a new tent and a family that includes a middle aged bloke wearing a superdry tshirt, kids running wild from arrival, and a wife smoking marlboro lite, and one of those £2 bbqs from asda lit on the grass......you're in for some trouble :-)    Especially if the coolbox is trailer-sized!!!!!!

Every campsite needs someone like the formidable ‘Madame’ who owned a campsite we stayed at in France a number of years ago. Sadly, a British family turned up with 2 teenage children who were exceptionally bad mannered. They completely ignored their parents and the parents largely ignored them apart from a few loud arguments. However, late one night the kids were causing a major nuisance on the campsite play area and the owner, who was a really tiny, very elderly French lady literally brought the two kids back to their parents, holding them by the ear, which was no mean feat as the kids were both about 6 foot tall. She informed the parents, in no uncertain terms, that if there was another peep out of any of them, they would be told to pack up and leave. She was so fierce that I think everyone on site, not just that family, were on their best behaviour for the rest of their holiday.

To be very honest ( and I am all for peace and quiet) in all the years I have been camping I have always been perplexed by people who get annoyed that some campers nearby are enjoying themselves and making a bit of noise.

Isn't camping all about having a fun time on holiday and enjoying yourself...or is it still all about silence and getting back in touch with nature (even though you are unlikely to find any nature on a campsite full of people)?

I have been on 'meets' with both UKCS and other camping groups and everyone enjoys sitting around in the evenings (often around a campfire), knocking back a few alcoholic beverages and having a good old chinwag, jokes, and general patter, and that can go on until the early hours of the morning without anyone getting loud, abusive or foul mouthed.

Why then do a large number of people who go camping insist that everyone else complies with their bedtimes and social habits to the extent that most campsites have had to enforce quiet curfews?

As I said in an earlier post...where are the campsites where people can enjoy being on holiday, letting their hair down and enjoying a few beers. Are the 'quiet and boring' campers the ones who normally go to bed at 2130 every night whether they are tired or not and expect everyone else to do the same, and only enjoy half a glass of sherry at births, deaths and marriages, and maybe a full glass on New Years Eve?

I do not object to other people enjoying themselves, however, I believe people need to recognise and respect others' wishes to have some peace and quiet.

Letting critters and ankle biters run amok, screaming their heads off and playing games where they are not supposed to without supervision;
people staying up late socialising, playing music etc. after the stated curfew time; dogs that are not suitably controlled, fouling and barking constantly and into the night; etc. etc., are disrespectful to the other campers.

I would rather put up with the noises from the dawn chorus and from a working farm throughout the day.

Each to their own.

I agree with the barking dogs and unruly kids bit but doesn't the need to recognise and respect others wishes work both ways? The quiet rules (assuming they are not part of the campsite licence of course) are usually applied because people who want peace and quiet complain about people who want to stay up late and chat...I am not talking about rowdiness of course.

If they want peace and quiet why do they camp on a commercial site in a unit which is far from sound proof and among possibly hundreds of other people who are bound to create noise?

Incidentally I have stayed on farm campsites and the blooming noise from braying donkeys, baa'ing sheep and crowing cockerels at 0500 drove me nuts!

Each to his/her own. We are all different.

I’m a night owl. I hate mornings. The same people who complain about noise, and I mean reasonable noise such as sitting out talking with friends not rowdy parties, after their bedtime which is sometimes as early 9.30pm, often think nothing of making noise themselves early in the morning. I’m sure they would be amazed if I complained about them. We are on a campsite atm and I was woken up only this morning by a couple noisily doing their washing up at 7.15am, while shouting at their barking dog to be quiet. They were oblivious to the vans with their blinds still drawn with people obviously still asleep in them nearby.

Surely there has to be give and take by all. We are all out there to enjoy ourselves.

I also think that big campsites would do well to start doing what festival campsites often do, have a ‘quiet’ or ‘family’ area which has stricter noise rules between certain hours so that people have the choice.

I am an owl myself, and am getting up at about 06:30 when Bean my new puppy wakes up while at home.

I worried about him getting up and barking early in the morning and late at night while camping, hence I spent time in the van with him while parked outside my house first to see how he behaved; to be followed by a 2-night test trip at a campsite close to home; to make sure he was ready for camping before our next trip later this month which is a 4-nighter further afield.

Had he not been ready, then I would have postponed the trip until he is ready.

Good job he was well-behaved during the 2-nighter test trip, and we shall be off soon for our next trip.

I tried to avoid slamming the van door too loudly late at night and early in the morning, and had used my own bathroom late at night so as to avoid opening and closing the van door.

I shall do what I can so that both of us do not end up annoying the other campers.

Totally agree Bob.

That's why I never feel guilty about being stood around waiting for the kettle to whistle, whilst belching, farting, and rattling my spoon around in my tin mug at 05:15 every morning.
Truth be told, it's my favourite time of the day! So peaceful!

Reading about noise on campsites and 'night owls' reminds me of my last stay at Nantcol.

The campsite was pretty quiet both day and night but when it got properly dark and and I was zipped in the sleeping bag, an owl or owls started up in the nearby woods.

I,m not talking about the toowit towoo call and response of the male and female tawny owls, I mean the blood curdling screeching and screaming that proper owls do.

I remembered it from my childhood and did what I would have done then, listened to it for a while, then fell fast asleep.
