Luck of the draw with our British weather.

Hopefully it will be calmer by the time I get to North Devon on Sunday.

Pretty blustery in Hampshire at the moment, and gaining in strength, so the West Country is no doubt worse because the storm is coming from that direction.

My wife is on some of the camping social media groups and there’s always people on there going on about how they were camping once and EVERYONE else’s tent blew down one year except theirs……how much they hate airbeams, or how much they hate poled tents, etc etc, looking past the fact that each pitched tent is unique in location and unique in how it is pitched/set up, age of the tent, etc……….nasty, mean people revelling in someone else’s suffering because they think it proves their tent is better. Even if their tent is better it just shows they are bitter and smug and have spiteful ugly souls.

I find that a really sad thing to see, and I’m glad it’s not something I see on this site. Feel the warmth and I hope everyone is fine xxx

Looking at the local SW news it’s been a pretty bad night for campers.

Lots of damaged tents and a pretty unpleasant night for a lot of people. One site on the Isles of Scilly evacuated their campers to the local community hall overnight, some campsites moved campers into more sheltered spots and a Camp Bestival in Dorset has delayed it’s opening due to damage to tents etc.

We were supposed to be camping on the Dorset coast this weekend but chickened out, and by the weather we’ve had at home in Somerset last night and this morning I’m glad we did.

It is sad to see that happening. In psychology terms it is called schadenfreude.

I used to be in some social media groups like that but left because of the mean and disparaging comments often made by others. Whatever happened to just being nice! I love this site and am so glad everyone here is kind and considerate, even when I post daft things!

On a lighter note, yes, Thursday night was horrendous weather for campers but by Friday morning Radio Cornwall were reporting some local people were offering holidaymakers the loan of their tents so they could continue with their holiday. Restoring our faith in human nature .

I was camping near Perranporth on Thursday night when the storm hit. Fortunately, my Outwell Trout Lake 4 stood up really well and I only lost one tent peg. A couple of tents next to me didn`t fare so well as their carbon poles broke in some very severe gusts of wind. Both parties were forced to abandon their tents and sleep in their cars. They packed up and left on the Friday.affect There were about five other tents in the same field as me, all air beam and they showed no signs of damage. A site about half a mile away lost about 20 tents and was featured on the BBC local news. The site however, is very large and very exposed.

We were on Trevornick last Thursday night and it was, shall we say, character building for the kids !. We were lucky that both our tents (steel poled, delta pegs etc) were OK although a lot of people were packing up Thursday afternoon to avoid it, some of whom had bookings till Saturday. Quite a few tents in the bins Friday as well.
