Hi folks,

What's your top tips on easy cook meals when camping? I've seen the pre made all in one bag curries, breakfasts, chillis etc but they're quite expensive. Alternatives from super markets?

A packet of Bens 2 minute Rice, meat of your choice (pre-cooked chicken easiest) or king prawns, chopped vegetables of your choice, Soy sauce or gravy, throw it all into a wok and stir fry on a stove until done. Ingredients of course can vary according to taste.

Yup!

Being on my own, I often cook or prep in bulk at home, portion into individual containers before freezing.

I make freezer packs of meat such as breakfast packs, bacon packs, single item meat portion such as homemade burgers, marinated chicken thighs/pork shoulder steaks, lamb ribs etc...

I have a lot of Lock and Lock tubs in single portion sizes, and a vacuum sealer.

I usually take something from the freezer for the first night as I often do not fancy cooking much after a long drive and setting up.

Great stuff. Thanks guys. We pre made made a curry last time then reheated with boil in the bag rice.

Problem with this trip is we've got a stopover before we travel out. I was wondering if there were any treats in world food isles that are already in a packet and just require reheating? Dhal etc.

How about instant noodles, such as Kabuto and my personal favourite which is Shin Cup (a spicy Korean instant noodle)?

I carry a Shin Cup in my van all the time, plus cup soups, in the event I fancy a snack and not a big meal.

I have seen some pre-cooked curries in pouches in the World Food isle of a supermarket in a town with a sizable ethnic population, from a reputable brand, and they look very nice on the packaging. However, I have not tried them myself.

You haven't said what your source of heating is. A camping stove, mini oven, microwave? If you have EHU and a mini oven or microwave the choice of pre-cooked meals is endless.

If you are able to boil things in bags then cod steaks in butter or parsley sauce from the frozen aisle might come in handy. Eat with Idahoan Mash which just requires boiling water.

For how many people?
Tinned Chilli from M&S is great, Tesco OK. There is a good pouch of refried beans with chipotle in Tesco. Chilli, beans, a tortilla wrap, a microwave of ‘Mexican rice’ ( the microwave rice pouches can be tipped in a pan and heated with a splash of water): burritos!

M&S tinned curries are good.

You can cook pasta without boiling it... use a kettle or pan to boil water and put in your pasta (if using a kettle pour water over dried pasta in a bowl you can cover), in the pan if using a pan... wait 10 to 15 minutes depending in pasta type) cover, and wrap with a towel to insulate, whilst you make your sauce. Drain pasta at end of soaking time and stir into to your sauce. Only one burner needed. Or if you are a very wet sauce, you can cook your pasta from 'raw' in the sauce. Just takes longer. I am self-proclaimed queen of the one pot wonder at home or abroad 😆

Pie and baked beans. Place the pies on top of the beans in the pan when you heat them.

Mince (either fresh or canned), a can of peas and a can of potatoes. Heat them all together in a single pan,

I like the supermarket packs of dried couscous, to which you add boiling water; leave for 5 mins, stir in whatever you want (tuna, tomato and cucumber I like), add a bit of salad and your meal's ready. Moroccan Medley, roasted veg flavours etc.

Thank you everyone. Some great tips. Looking to keep eight down so sachets over tins ideal. Although a great option we've done before is micro rice (just heat up) or boil in the bag rice. Then a ton of chick pea Dahl from Asda. Spice it up as you like or add extras like chicken. Enough for two.

People may hate this... But! We find the one thing that is usually in abundance is water wherever we camp :p So, don't transport water! It's bulky and pointless.

Dried everything is our super power. Smash, lentils, pulses, spice mixes, pastas, noodles, rice, soup... etc etc. Then just rehydrate as required lol. They're usually the cheapest items in supermarket anyway and you then just mix what you fancy. Also means people can eat differently which saves arguments with he kids. For stuff that doesn't dry, get tins! They're packed to the brim so no wasted space and no need to refrigerate.

Family and friends think I'm crazy, but I probably pack a weeks worth of food in a days worth of "hydrated" space... And it's fun being different when camping! :D

Instant mashed potato is great, NOT Smash as that is not very nice, the ones from Lidl and Idahoan Mash brand from Morrisons are pretty decent.

I add butter, cream, black pepper and spring onions to mine when I am camping; plus grated cheese when I am at home.

Cous cous is good too, and Ainsley Harriot's range are pretty decent.
