Hello all, We are off to the south of France later this year. I was originally planning on doing the drive in one hit, but as time goes by I’m starting to think it’s unrealistic. So I’m currently planning on booking a campsite for a night (somewhere around clermont-ferrad). I’m sure a hotel would be more straightforward but my logic is there’ll be more for the kids (7 & 9) to do so they should be able to burn off some energy, I won’t have to worry about the security of my trailer and we’ll, it’s supposed to be a camping holiday!

Problem is that I really don’t fancy putting up our tent for one night, so I’m considering buying something that I can pitch quickly. Criteria is that it needs to be quick to pitch, not overly bulky and can accommodate 2 x 70cm air beds and 2 x 76cm sims.

I was originally thinking about the Quechua 4.1 air tent, reason being it could also be used for weekend camps, but the bedroom isn’t quite wide enough. The next size up feels like it’s too big, and wouldn’t really save much in terms of effort to pitch.

So I’m now leaning towards getting a couple of small 2/3 man tents. I like the look of the Quechua 2 second tent, although it’s not quite wide enough. The 3 man version at £200 each feels bit too pricy.

Has anyone done something similar before. Can anyone recommend any tents to consider?

Search ebay for a cheap Khyam quick erect. Out the bag and up in less than 2 minutes.

Are you after a 1 room 4 man tent that you all cram into or would you prefer a 2 room tent with a porch area in the middle?

The Quecha 4.1 is £107 is this your limit ?

Enjoy the liveliness of the syntax.

It was the air version I was looking originally. I’d like to get something sorted for under £300 really. The more I look, I think we’ll be better of with two pop small tents. The kyham tents mentioned above look pretty good, but pricey. Slumit and decathlon also have some true pop up tents.

Not sure if I’d be better of getting a hiking tent (on the assumption for the same price it’s likely to be a little better quality).

You've probably already decided this but, we always used a couple of Decathlon Air pop-ups for overnights. The Air versions (I don't mean inflatable) have better ventilation, which helps significantly in France, especially if you're travelling further south. The Fresh&Black option is worth getting, as the inside of the tent stays cooler.

The main reason for us getting pop-ups is, there's no pegging (unless you want to or it's very windy) for overnights; just chuck your stuff in and get in.

I'd suggest getting two 3 person pop ups, rather than 2 person. The extra room makes them a bit cooler inside and provides room for an overnight bag etc.

Let us know what you get and how you get on? Best of luck with it.

We've had several versions over the years, these were the last and are very good.

The Decathlon one in your link looks good bit I'd definitely go for the 3 person version,if funds will allow (I realise it's a lot more expensive though, especially when you need to buy x 2) but it will be so much more comfortable).

Vango do some very quick 2/3/4 man tents. Never had an issue with any of them and I now own 5!

+1 For Vango.
The Galaxy 300 is a brilliant tent, 5000mm and alloy poles.
Its a 3 person tent that has just three poles ( colour coded ) and two struts for the awning.
Packs up really small and weighs just 5.5kg not bad for a tent you can stand up in !
Sadly discontinued but still widely available on line at the moment and the glory of it ? I can get this tent pitched in ten minutes! *
* First time pitching will take longer but once erected can be put away as is.
