Your very first sentence can only be answered by yourself.
Been insuring ours with Shield since buying new in late 2014. Not needed to make a claim to this point.
Our household insurance pretty much (would have) covered it for while it was bagged up in the house and/or shed, or whilst set up on site, but crucially ONLY when we were in attendance, which we deemed almost pointless.
Our "proper" camping insurance covers us for whilst it's set up on site and we are out on our bikes for the day... in fact we can leave it set up on site and wander off for up to 4 consecutive nights left unattended, and still be covered.
Theft, deliberate or accidental damage, storm etc.
Tent, awnings, and all related camping equipment.
UK and continental travel/camping.
All included.
Imagine someone else's gazebo flying through the air. The neighbours car driving over a guyline, pulling the whole tent with it. Someone's campfire spurting out sparks. Kids running... jumping... falling! Trees/branches falling.
An 8m Motorhome reversing into it. (That almost happened last month! Only the flimsy dividing bushes and Muckerette's desperate screams averted it... by inches! ).
None of that would be covered by our household insurance if we weren't in attendance. And we can't rely on others to have sufficient cover to pay up... or even admit liability!
Let's not forget, this isn't out on the open road. It could be argued we are on private property, so other folks' motoring insurance may not be applicable! I'd imagine camp site owners wont take responsibility for one of their customers damaging your equipment.
With over £3.5k's worth of new gear, I've been paying around the £100 mark each year, to have it as fully insured as we could get.
Not checked, but it would almost certainly probably cost closer to the £5k mark to replace it all with new, at today's prices.
It's all literally as good as new. Faded in colour, yes, but all perfectly in working order, with one very minor cosmetic repair, and all still performing to 100% as new.
Looking at current used prices, and taking inflation/today's new prices into account, I'd probably get close to what I paid, certainly 80% ish, if I was to sell up now. (I have no intention of doing so, just for clarity! )
In hindsight, that £800 I've spent so far on insurance has been a waste... as I haven't had to make a claim... but I'm still glad I had it, and still thinking I'll carry on for a couple more years yet, before reassessing the situation.
I always said we'd insure for 10 years or so, then think again. I guess you are now at this stage?
I'll also wait to see what the 2022 premium is, when August comes around. Any silly price hikes, and we may call it a day!
It's not just the smell of canvas, the peace, the fresh air, the hooting owls, and the rustling trees that make camping help you sleep better at night!
It's a yes from me.
