Just recently got back in to camping and just as I thought we had everything (hard to imagine anything we *don't* take with us!) I now discover that Outwell made a roof protector for our Montana 6P and it sounds like the perfect accessory.

Am I the last to have learnt about these? Any downsides? I wondered what they might be like in the wind? Any risk of abrasion of the tent?

(If anyone has one for sale for the Montana 6P please do shout!)

Gives protection from sun & UV, it seems (and bird poo).

If it is too windy take it off or it will damage the roof or the protector. I have just had this happen with mine

We have the protector for out Nevada 5mp and the main 2 advantages are the outside space it gives you as a cooking area and the silver side which reduces internal temp dramatically. However the design of the extension bit (not the bit that covers the roof itself) is pants! The gully does not self drain and as has been mentioned is a huge sail in the wind. We've had ours 5 years and are on our 3rd set of poles! However, that said, we would not be without it and I'm currently designing a version for the Airville 6SA we also now own. I may just go down the route of getting the Extension 5 and putting silvered fabric over it, or I may just do the whole thing from scratch.

Apparently Outwell stopped making them due to claims of abrasion on airbeam tents. Not seen any on our poled 5MP.

You had me confused for a bit there The Brewer as I wondered what you meant by the 'extension' but is your roof protector one of those 'dual' ones with the extra bit at the side?

Now that we've been back a week I'm less itching to spend money on more camping stuff so if a protector comes up I might consider but I think I'm going to tone the hunt down as we've coped well enough without one for all these years so will regard it more as a 'nice to have' than a 'must have' that I was otherwise thinking it might be!

Well, its a must have if you intend spending any time in the tent on a sunny day, and also if you don't have any outside shade from another source eg gazebo. We wouldn't go away without it.

Yes I was referring to the side extension you get from the protector (though this can be zipped off)
