We bought this air tent in 2016 and love it! We have been really careful , we thought, drying it out before storing it away. This morning , whilst camping in Wales, we have spotted mildew on the roof! We have dealt with mildew on canvas ( then re proofed the whole tent) but not sure what to do with polyester?
Any ideas?
Will be very interested if anyone replies to your query. We have had our air tent for just over a year and, like you, are very particular not to put it away damp.
We have found a good way of drying the roof. We fold a king sized flannelette sheet into a triangle, roll it up and tie string to both ends; we throw it over the tent and pull along over the beams, works a treat.
Virsec, we use towels to dry the whole tent as we take it down, then have it in our sun room draped over the furniture and rotating it regularly which is why we are so upset !
The best solution is to keep the mould/mildew it as dry as possible. We recommend using Milton's Baby Sterilizing Fluid, diluting the product and sponging down the affected area; this may not remove the mould completely, but it will prevent it from spreading/smelling.
But of course, they don't say what the material is!
Thanks. That's what we've done in the past with canvas - as you say, not sure about this nylon/ polyester type fabric and also what to reproof it with.
you do not use milton on the tent, it will total ruin it. if the mildew isnt to bad just erect the tent and wash off as much as you can using plenty of plain water and leave to dry for as long as you can.
next it is pointless using fabsil on a nylon tent! it just runs off and kills the grass, it doesnt work at all. a nylon tent is made waterproof by the coating on the inside,
and finally the best "cure" is to leave the tent up and let the sun at it, that will eventually "bleach" the mildew so the stains arent so noticable
Thanks Marg6 - that was what we did with our trailer tent and it worked beautifully on canvas. But we have nylon/ polyester this time and don't want to make matters worse. We'll get a brush and brush the outside with plain water ( though there's been shedloads of rain these last few days on it! )
"We strongly recommend that you stay away from any detergent, as this can ruin the waterproofing on your tent.
However I would personally recommend Nikwax techwash or any tent/awning cleaner that is similar as these are normally "safe" soap based products that don't harm the fabrics as much.
Dab!! Don't brush! (soak in a little of the product concentrated to start if needed) and try to lift and wipe away with a sponge. Unfortunately this takes time and effort, but the results can come through.
Also don't worry if you can't remove all the stain, mildew is notorious, but the stain as a whole won't effect the waterproofing and will fade with time.
Lastly, if you need to; it may be time to apply a coating of waterproofing. Any Fabsil or similar brand sealant will be perfect. As a final tip, always aim to protect against U.V. rather than just "waterproof". The sun will always do more damage to polyester than rainfall ever will, so applying the protection against U.V. will always have you covered against leaks and add to the lifetime of your tent."
